About this listen
A Mass Murder. A Disappearance. A Cemetery Ransacked.
It looked like another ordinary day in Los Angeles. Then night came...Evil as old as the centuries has descended upon the City of Angels - it comes as a kiss from the terrifying but seductive immortals. Slowly at first, then by the legions, the ravenous undead choke Los Angeles with bloodthirsty determination - and the hordes of monstrous victims steadily mount each night.
High above glitter city a deadly contest begins. In the decaying castle of a long-dead screen idol, the few remaining human survivors prepare to face the Prince of Evil and his satanic disciples. Whilst the very forces of nature are called into play, isolating the city from the rest of the world and leaving it at the mercy of the blood-hungry vultures of the night...They Thirst

Next, Prince Vulcan and the Head Master are interesting protagonists but I found them (the Head Master significantly so) underdeveloped. As far as villains go, Roach was by far the standout for me and I'd actually have loved to see the Palatazin/Roach rivalry as the central tension in a crime thriller with supernatural undertones than this giant tome which I found quite awkwardly split across genres and themes.
The story was wild and, despite its length, the book is very well-paced. My favourite part being the rise of the sandstorm from the desert. The author took his time bringing this on and I found the anticipation delicious.
All-in-all, these characters are strong and daring and likeable but, given the ending which seems to come from nowhere, it would appear they had little control of the outcome which was such a shame given the work put into Palatazin, Silvera, and Wes. Some catharsis was nice with the final act of Silvera although it came and went far too quickly.
I'd struggle to recommend but any vampire fans should give it a go. It's worth sticking at but isn't a standout story for me.
A fun ride, sure. But a real dud of an ending.
