About this listen

“I was not looking for love, but there you were. I cannot stop it, I cannot indulge it, so I must put distance between us and hope that time will heal this fever I have.”

Abandoned by her mother and ignored by her father, it is hardly any wonder young Elizabeth Bennet’s curiosity soon brings about trouble and marriage to a man she does not love. Colonel Fitzwilliam’s family - save for his cousin Mr. Darcy - despises her, and life is not what she dreamed of. As she matures and grows from an impetuous girl into a woman, Elizabeth’s most reliable source of friendship and comfort becomes Mr. Darcy. When tragedy strikes, leaving her a widow, she is free to discover who has been in her heart all along.

Darcy has always been intrigued by the girl his beloved cousin married, and finds himself drawn into helping her after her husband’s death. Over time, admiration turns to love. Admitting his feelings to her - or even himself - could lead to ruin, but denying his passion could shatter him.

I liked the premise of Elizabeth marrying someone else before Darcy. However, after a promising beginning this book turned into a bit of a dull slog which I made myself finish.
This isn't really an Elizabeth/Darcy story at all - they are SO far out of character, and the Elizabeth character was so annoying with her stupid decisions that I couldn't root for her at all or feel any sympathy. A lot of the events were preposterous - there's no way, for instance, that Jane would have left her beloved sister in absolute penury. The characters behaved in ways which would never have been accepted in Regency England.
The narrator was OK but not great.

A bit dull and the characters' behaviour was frustrating.

Almost unrecognisable as a Pride and Prejudice variation. if it wasn't for the names you wouldn't really know that it had even the slightest similarities. Did it spoil my enjoyment, after a few chapters, not at all.
The narrator was very good, Darcy's voice was not to my taste but that's my opinion. Overall I enjoyed it on my dog walks.

A very different story

No one who has read and has a love for Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice would have written this and have the audacity to call it a P&P variation. The working class narration and Darcy’s grating growl does not improve story.

Not a P&P Variation ❣️
