About this listen

In 1887, Elizabeth Berry found notoriety throughout the nation after the death of her daughter, perceived by many to be the cruellest of murders. There were many who protested her innocence in the affair, but there were also suspicions surrounding another death related to the nurse - that of her mother.

Suddenly Elizabeth Berry's dark story began appearing darker still. For the first time, we discover the true story behind this infamous case of the first woman to be hanged at Liverpool's Walton Prison.

There are no spoilers here as Miss Berry's guilt is pronounced virtually from the first page. And indeed, she was found guilty in a court of law and sentenced to death. This is real crime and the case put is more about 'why' than 'who' done it.

What a Wicked Woman

A killer I had not heard of, very interesting story and very thorough. There is a lot of repetition but they are detailing a number a trials so it’s to be expected

Very interesting

Utterly absorbing and produced to the highest standard throughout. Seldom have I been gripped with the intensity invested in one Audible title. Many of the unsettling twists and turns simply boggle the mind. Far fetched in fiction, staggering in reality. A true crime triumph.

5 Stars, at the very least

my main point of irritation with factual books is when they don't name the chapters for content (just number) making it a pain if I want to relisten to specific parts. For some reason as well in this particular book the chapters labels are out if sync with the audio, they are one out ie audio announces chapter 20 but on audible it is labelled in the chapters list as 21.
other wise this is a well researched and presented true crime book

interesting book

Excellent narrator which can make or break an audio experience. The story itself very well researched. I can't help thinking this woman was inspired by Mary Ann Cotton of the decade before as there are alot of similarities between the cases yet this one I have never heard of before. I do recommend this book and enjoyed it very much over the course of only 2 days as I found it so interesting and compelling

A Murderess in the style of Mary Ann Cotton
