Summary

A genderbent reimagining of the classic fairytale The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

Theodore Gale is a 25-year-old, unemployed, playboy cowboy with the propensity for getting into fights. After winning a bronco riding competition, he decides to celebrate with a southern belle he sneaks to the barn at the Gale Farm. The following morning should have started with some kinky fun, but instead his life is turned upside down when a green tornado appears and takes Theo’s barn to another world.

With only his gray horse, Toto, as a companion, Theo arrives in Oz. As he tries to make heads or tails out of this strange new world, he ends up liberating various villages from the tyranny of, first, the Wicked Warlock of the East, who was killed accidentally when Theo’s barn dropped on top of him, and secondly, the Wicked Warlock of the West, Jadyn, who’d turned an entire village into toys, enslaved them, and was forcing them to brew potions.

It’s on the outskirts of Toy Village that Theo meets a damsel in distress, who is about to get ripped apart by crows. Her name is Anne Raggedy. She calls herself a Scarecrow, but Theo doesn’t find her very frightening, and actually ends up getting confused boners for the life-size doll. When Theo discovers that Anne used to be human, he decides to travel with her to the Emerald City in order to find a way to break her curse, so he can get laid. Joining them on their quest is a cowardly lioness and a cyborg assassin named Tina Woodcutter.

Raunchy cowboy adventures

Theodore Gale is a lover not a killer, he finds himself transported to the strange land of Oz where people think he is the foretold saviour of Oz. He’s not so sure about that, but his barn did land on the wicked Wizard of the East, the infamous Dr Doppelganger, resulting in him acquiring a ruby gauntlet with anti-magic powers. His past experience of bar brawls seems to be ideal experience in navigating past enemies and saving enslaved denizens. Gale’s friendly and easy-going nature is what sets him apart as he refuses to be manipulated into doing others dirty work for them, resulting in him making friends with those he rescued along the way. I loved the tropes running through the story, there are echoes of the original story threaded through with novel, interesting and amusing ideas. All described in KuroKoneko Kamen’s colourful and detailed style. I voluntarily listened and reviewed an advanced copy of this story. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Interesting twist on a classic

I had fun listening to this. A different take on a well known fairytale. The characters were quirky and loveable, especially the MC, delightful. Good narration as well. I was given this audiobook by the Author in exchange for an honest review.

A fun twist on a classic

This twisted fairytale follows the original so closely, that it is truly enjoyable to compare them as you read along. Theodore is one fine cowboy. I truly enjoyed how Ann and Leo fought over him throughout the story. There were some very hot scenes that could melt a Kindle. My favorite part had to be Leo's kidnapping and rescue. I really enjoyed this twist of Wizard of Oz and would love to read more by Mr. Kamen.

This is the first narration I heard by L.A. Johnson. The narration really enhanced the story. It was easy to follow and fun to listen. L.A. Johnson brought all the characters to life. Each character had a unique voice which truly brought out the characters attributes. I am looking forward to hearing more from this narrator.

Twisted fairytale

Really enjoying these genderbent fairytales. You have the over all background of the original story with but with a whole new twist. It allows KuroKoneko to let the imagination run wild and add lots of sexy to mix in with the action.

Interesting Slant on the Wizard of Oz Story…

This was an entertaining listen as we follow Theodore Gale’s adventures in Oz. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this tale. Besides the “genderbent” aspect of this story, there were interesting deviations in the story. I found myself rooting for Jadyn, the Wicked Warlock of the West. I’m hooked with this story, so I’ll definitely want to get the next book about Theodore Gale in Oz to find out if the warnings given to Tina Woodcutter (the cyborg assassin) are really true. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

There's no place like home

Theodore is a playboy cowboy that loves to fight. One day he is taken by a tornado to a strange new mystical land. This land seems to have danger everywhere. In this new land some things are not what they appear to be on the outside. Toto is his faithful horse. He meets the scarecrow, Anne as well as others that help him. One thing he really wants to do is return Anne back into a human because he loves her. The narrator does a great job of leading us through the land of Oz.

Ms Kamen does an amazing job of leading us on this whimsical adventure in this genderbent fairytale. Her imagination takes us on a rollercoaster ride of excitement and new ways to look at an old fairytale. Let your imagination run wild and enjoy this fun story. There is no place like home but home may not be where you think it is. I received this Audible book in exchange for an honest review.

Adventure Awaits!

The cowardly lion wanted courage, the tin man wanted a heart, the scarecrow wanted a brain, and Dorothy wanted to go home. I grew up watching the fantastical story of The Wizard of Oz but this re-telling is such a great twist on the old classic. A story that reveals you are more than what you appear to be on the outside. It’s your actions that decide if you are good or evil and home truly is where the heart is.

I would’ve loved to hear a more country drawl to Theodore’s voice, but he made a great hero. Can’t wait for the next adventure!

thoroughly enjoyed it

Did the story keep me engaged: yes
Did I feel an emotional connection to the characters: yes
Would I listen to it again: yes

Story comments: Was a delightfully colourful role-reversed retelling of The Wizard of Oz. Action packed with good pacing and interesting characters - this book could easily be made into a remake of the original movie.
It's a complete story for Theo and Anne, but now I need the Wicked Warlock of Oz to find out what happens for Jaydn.

Narrator comments: L. A. Johnson did a good job. His narration throughout this series keeps getting better.
