It took me a while to finally getting down to reading this, but once I did, I was not disappointed. The tension grabs you from the very first page. In the summary, it says this will appeal to fans of “the shining” by Stephen King, and having read both, I can see why. A man slowly driven out of control by the location he’s in. The line “take your medicine,” is also used in this book, all be it, Patrick means it literally, where as Jack Torrance meant it in a punishment sense. I guessed a few of the twists before they happened, but the “woman in the dark” came through in the end, helping Sarah out of danger. I disliked Patrick from page 1, even before they moved. Jack from the shining, same. There are a lot of similarities between the 2 in my opinion. Although, whereas Patrick was pure evil, I think Torrance was just miss guided, and had habits he could not break. If you’ve read this but not “the shining,” I recommend you do. A really good book, it tackles sensitive subjects IE self harm, child abuse, but does so in a way which makes you want to keep reading to find out what happens next. I have to say, my sympathy for Patrick didn’t change all through the book, I believe people are who they want to be with help, not by past issues. Really well narrated too, it’s not a book with any humour in it, it’s tense and disturbing throughout. There were times I wanted to shake Sarah, too. Only ones I really felt for all the way through, were Joe and Mia. Some very sad parts, too.

This book was so good. I really enjoyed it, it kept me interested a proper page turner. In my opinion not all the characters were likeable and some got what they deserved. Please give it ago, the narrator was very good 😃😃😃

I found this story extremely gripping and beautifully narrated throughout,although I did find the audio slightly distorted.
You won’t be disappointed, a great mix of crime and a touch of the supernatural (or is it), read it and find out.

This was a really good book. It was very tense from start to finish and a good depiction of a slow descent into insanity and the unraveling of a family. The description of the house was very creepy and as a listener, it came to life and the impact it had on the family. The narration was good with just the right amount of fear projected through Siriol Jenkins voice for the main character. I sort of guessed the twist but it did not spoil it for me. A good listen.
