About this listen

"[A] huge and sprawling tale of horror." —The New York Times Book Review

Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches—a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women.

Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale that challenges everything we believe in.

Took me a while to get into, however it was interesting, eventually. Rotten ending, leaves it up in the air. Going to look if there are any more though.

Loved this audiobook. I basically couldn't put it down. There were sections that I would have cut out however (it's a very long book) but I'm now completely obsessed with the story and want to read the others.

This story is so sumptuous and beautifully descriptive that I am absolutely in love with the Mayfair family. I have read the book several times and waited longingly for it to come to Audible. How well worth the wait it has been.

The narrator is perfect. She has obviously thought about this story and doesn't simply read - she acts with all the nuances being spot on.

My favourite section of the book is the long, but never boring, second part where Anne Rice provides us with the gloriously rich history of the Mayfair family. I would give my eye teeth to visit the house and sit on the rocking chair on the porch.

I will be listening to this book more than once, and would firmly recommend it to anyone, even those who are put of by the witches aspect of the story. It bears no resemblance whatsoever to Disney witches or the fantastic Harry Potter world, rather it is a more realistic tale of family, relationships, and love.

Thank you, Anne Rice, for this gift.

Kate narrates this story wonderfully, using her various voices and accents to truly bring out the complex world of characters in this book. I highly recommend it.
