About this listen

Hated. Distrusted. Needed.

Richter von Dagentear, a witch hunter known in legend as the Wight, traverses a realm falling headfirst into war. To survive, he will have to betray his profession’s purpose and undertake a task that goes against everything he believes in. All that stands in his way are backstabbing nobles, cruel sellswords, terrible beasts, and a mysterious traveler from another world.

Battle Brothers is set in a gritty, low fantasy medieval world with a focus on the common man. Here, everyday people are not concerned with the happenings of history, and their belief in the future is about as far flung as tomorrow’s sunrise. It is about getting you and yours fed and making it to the next day. With money being scarce and the wilds full of danger, many turn to mercenaries, witch hunters, beast slayers, and more. These lowly vocations fulfill a need: to take all the world’s violence and–hopefully–point it somewhere useful.

Story had nice twists. Dialogue was witty and beliavable. Action was nice! And the story and depiction was loyal to the game with panicking brothers and drafting and whatnot. Postive surprise!

excellent and loyal novelization of the game

I like that the world is dark and gritty but still contains levity. I love Richter as a main character and I think all the cast is reasonably fleshed out so that you can grow attached.

Amazing entry in the world of Battle Brothers

There’s a halfway decent story buried in here somewhere and the performance is fine, but the constant forced grim-darkness is tiresome. For example, there are two separate instances where characters are tortured or mutilated in circumstances where it would be physically impossible for it to occur due to lack of time. Where it does happen, it serves no narrative purpose.

There are some other issues with the writing, the most glaring being that major plot points are driven by the otherwise reasonably intelligent MC being handed the Idiot Ball when convenient.

Edgy for edginesses sake
