Story
The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

The luminous energy field, also called the light body, halo, or aura, is a translucent, multicolored matrix that envelops and surrounds us, extending just beyond the body in all directions. This field organizes our physical body as well as our thoughts and emotions. The luminous energy field contains a template of how we live, how we age, how we heal, and how we might die. This template is based on an "archive" of all of our personal and ancestral memories, early-life trauma, and wounds from former lifetimes. These records or imprints are stored in full color and intensity of emotion.

A gospel, as ancient and authentic as any of the gospels that the Christian bible contains, was buried deep in the Egyptian desert after an edict was sent out in the 4th century to have all copies of it destroyed. Fortunately, some rebel monks were wise enough to refuse - and thanks to their disobedience and spiritual bravery, we have several manuscripts of the only gospel that was written in the name of a woman: The Gospel of Mary Magdalene.

Summary
For generation after generation, Toltec shamans have passed down their wisdom through teaching stories. The purpose of these stories is to implant a seed of knowledge in the mind of the listener, where it can ultimately sprout and blossom into a new and better way of life.
In The Wisdom of the Shamans: What the Ancient Masters Can Teach Us about Love and Life, Toltec shaman and master storyteller Don Jose Ruiz shares some of the most popular stories from his family's oral tradition and offers corresponding lessons that illustrate the larger ideas within each story.
Ruiz begins by explaining that contrary to the stereotypical image of "witchdoctor", the ancient shamans were men and women who fulfilled several roles within their communities: philosopher, spiritual guide, medical doctor, psychologist, and friend.
According to Ruiz, their teachings are not primitive or reserved for a chosen few initiates but are instead a powerful series of lessons on love and life that are available us all. To that aim, he has included exercises, meditations, and shamanic rituals in an effort to help you experience the personal transformation these stories offer.
The shamans taught that the truth you seek is inside of you. Let these stories, lessons, and tools be your guide to finding the innate wisdom that lives within.

The Understanding of life has always been beyond my understanding. Seeing life for what it is and excepting the idea of being perfect could sometimes be unfamiliar to me. After practicing the reflection part of this book of not judging my appearance, but excepting the truth that I am perfect has change my inner gratitude. This book is simply freeing and a gentle reminder that our perception changes the amount of joy we receive from life.

Wonderful message
The author does a great job of presenting ancient stories and then explaining the deep and meaningful lessons being taught. I have read The fifth agreement, Mastery of Love and Mastery of self and i still got a lot out of this one. Many of the messages are similar or repeated from the others, but there is also new stuff or different ways of presenting the wonderful messages from the others.

Waking up from delusion: the non-spooky approach.
Ever heard the phrase "There's nothing new under the sun?" The underlying truths that exist in this world have always existed and the Aboriginals, Native Americans, etc. knew this. But our interpretation of that truth is what creates some distortion. I have "read" via audiobooks the Toltec wisdom trilogy (4 agreements, voice of knowledge, mastery of love) as well as the 5th agreement, 5 levels of attachment, et al. And they have all proven that those ancient awakened teachers/Shamans/priests were quite sofisticated in their understanding of the interconnectiveness of nature and how that relates to the larger "dream of the planet." I like that he pays homage to the ancestors while at the same time admits that certain rituals will "die" or transform to keep up with the modern timecycle. I think this is particularly relevant to some afrocentric communities. The past can offer insights, but only to the point where it is relevant NOW (current circumstances). And I also like the fact that none of the Ruiz family talks DOWN to their readers. He readily acknowledges that not everyone will choose his [families] particular brand of Shamatic/Toltec wisdom. But that you are welcome to use the tools and examples provided as a guide post to your awakening. I am amazed at how deep our 'domestication' goes to subjugate our will (whether it be conformity to the external rules of outside society or "self-domestication"). But more importantly that we can adapt our reaction to a particular situation if we don't like it. And we can transform without having to shame or spook other people. José Ruiz shows us how with examples from past awakened 'beings' and his own life experiences. Narration was acceptable IMO; perhaps each member of the Ruiz family is experimenting with different narrators.
