Story
The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Summary
In The Four Agreements, a New York Times best seller for over seven years, don Miguel Ruiz revealed how the process of our education, or “domestication,” can make us forget the wisdom we were born with. Throughout our lives, we make many agreements that go against ourselves and create needless suffering. The Four Agreements help us to break these self-limiting agreements and replace them with agreements that bring us personal freedom, happiness, and love. Now don Miguel Ruiz joins his son don Jose Ruiz to offer a fresh perspective on the Four Agreements, and a powerful new agreement for transforming our lives into our personal heaven: the fifth agreement. The Fifth Agreement takes us to a deeper level of awareness of the power of the Self, and returns us to the authenticity we were born with. In this compelling sequel to the book that has changed the lives of millions of people around the world, we are reminded of the greatest gift we can give ourselves: the freedom to be who we really are.

Apply the 5th agreement to the book
Much of the book is a recap of the 4 Agreements, which is nice to review but is not fresh content. The 5th Agreement, which I will not spoil for those who don't know it, is a principle I already apply in my life and it's a good one but it's one that should also be applied to the teachings of this book, and indeed any teachings.
I enjoyed the book and I love the wisdom of it but I found some of the assertions to be unreasonable and found myself applying the 5th Agreement. As rules to live by, all 5 agreements are valuable and worth striving towards. I'm not sure how much of the expansion on the 5th agreement was actually useful or valuable, once you know what it is. It probably would have been helpful to do a deep dive into cognitive biases, as that is what it mainly relates to. The bible references/analogies and spiritual stories were a little off-putting for me but didn't quash the message of the book.

Thought provoking and life changing
If you've ever considered the insanity of the world and the way we respond to things. If you've realised that almost everything we stress about is nothing more than self initiated torture, then you will get this book. You have to listen carefully, to really get the concepts, but by the end of the book, you will realise that life need never be the same again. Life changing stuff if you care to take it onboard.

Back to basics inspiration
This practical guide adds to Ruiz' first book on the 4 agreements. It is back to basics common sense the Toltec way and can be applied by anyone and everyone. Truly inspiring and simple, and made all the more enjoyable when heard through the chocolatey tones of Peter Coyote's voice. Highly recommended.

repetitive
I couldn't get past the first 2 chapters of this book. It is so repetitive it drove me mad. It seems there is one idea in the book and this is endlessly repeated in different ways ad nauseum. The idea is not even original. Very disappointing as I loved "the four agreements" by the same author. It is basically terribly dull.

Fantastic! The next evolution of the toltec wisdom
This book is not just a review of the four agreements plus the fifth. It IS a re-statement of the first four agreements, but in much more detail and in more common language. I first became aware of the Toltec wisdom through Carlos Castaneda's series "the teachings of Don juan..." and they were impressive yet they seemed a distant unreachable wisdom in some far off world/ time shrouded in mystery etc. Then Merylin Tenneshende's book "Don Juan and the art of sexual energy" took the next step toward making the wisdom more tangible for the masses.
then Don Miguel Ruiz released "The four agreements" and it rose to great popularity in its profound power to help people transform their lives. It has served many people to such a transformations. It is a MUST READ in it's own right.
And now...
This new book "The fifth agreement..." is a crowning achievement of the Ruiz family to bring this level of clear communication of these Toltec teachings for everyone to reach. It speaks the teachings in such concise, direct, plain language using a wonderfully contemporary style.
Excellent! (Speaking impeccably) Totally worth it in my opinion!

A more robust "chicken soup' for your SOUL*
It's very good to read books from people who have the patience and discipline to write/share about matters of the heart, soul and spirit of living in/of which you are simpatico. Although this is a sequel to The 4 Agreements, it is NOT necessary to read the previous title. As all areas are covered within these pages/chapters.
The pros of the audiobook format is perfect for this genre of books/authors 1. you can bookmark certain sections that are significant and replay them during the times you might need to hear them. 2. Miguel's universal prayers are always good to have on tap during trying times.
Peter Coyote voice is heartfelt. It's very important that the voice reflects the author and his point of view/prespective especially in this genre. ONE of my FAVE-st authors!

The Four Didn't Need More
I originally read the Four Agreements years ago and they changed me and the way I lived my life. Agreement number 2 especially (don't take anything personally) made a difference and continues to do that today.
The Fifth Agreement is a good refresher for the original Four and an interesting addition to the agreements. Well worth the read. Not as impactful as the first book but how could it be, it was only 1 agreement against four. Thanks Don Ruiz, again!

What does Peter Coyote bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I listen to these books rather than reading them b/c of Peter Coyote's reading.
