Summary

The new vicar had never wanted a picture-postcard parish – or a huge and haunted vicarage. Nor had she wanted to walk into a dispute over a controversial play about a 17th-century clergyman accused of witchcraft ... a story that certain long-established families would rather remained obscure. But this is Ledwardine, steeped in cider and secrets ... a paradise of cobbled streets and timber-framed houses. And also – as Merrily Watkins and her teenage daughter, Jane, discover – a village where horrific murder is a tradition that spans centuries.©1998 Phil Rickman (P)2006 Isis Audio Detective Horror Mystery Supernatural Thriller & Suspense Women Sleuths Women's Fiction Scary Paranormal Fiction

Really enjoyed the story but the narrator nearly put me off! Such a drab voice, glad someone replaced her as I will definitely listen to the next story in the series

Great story

I've waited for such a long time to get this on audible. I had it on cassettes, but wore them out. I am one very happy listener.

Love this book so much.

I returned to this on audiobook, having read it several years ago. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it as much a second time, but I found myself binge listening and resenting events that took me away from it. I highly recommend the Merrily Watkins series of books.

As Good the Second Time

I liked all of it, all the voices and the way she reads, all except Lucy Devenish’s voice. I felt she should be more of a yokel and less of a boarding school mistress. Just a little thing. Otherwise perfect.

Well read
