About this listen

In this pioneering, practical book for parents, neuroscientist Daniel J. Siegel and parenting expert Tina Payne Bryson explain the new science of how a child's brain is wired and how it matures. Different parts of a child's brain develop at different speeds, and understanding these differences can help you turn any outburst, argument, or fear into a chance to integrate your child's brain and raise calmer, happier children.

Featuring clear explanations, age-appropriate strategies and illustrations that will help you explain these concepts to your child, The Whole-Brain Child will help your children to lead balanced, meaningful, and connected lives using 12 key strategies, including:

Name It to Tame It: corral raging right-brain behaviour through left-brain storytelling, appealing to the left brain's affinity for words and reasoning to calm emotional storms and bodily tension.

Engage, Don't Enrage: keep your child thinking and listening, instead of purely reacting.

Move It or Lose It: use physical activities to shift your child's emotional state.

Let the Clouds of Emotion Roll By: guide your children when they are stuck on a negative emotion, and help them understand that feelings come and go.

SIFT: help children pay attention to the Sensations, Images, Feelings, and Thoughts within them so that they can make better decisions and be more flexible.

Connect Through Conflict: use discord to encourage empathy and greater social success.

This book taught me more than anything I could have read on google when trying to decipher my daughter’s outbursts and outlandish behaviour.

It has truly changed my life and my family dynamic and made me a much better listener and attentive mother. I am more connected to my daughters for having read this.

Astounding

This book has already change my life for the better. My two year old is hugging me again!

I didn’t realise how much I would learn about myself.

It’s reduced my stress levels and improved the overall mood of our household.

Thank you

Game changer!

The book was not too long, good in general but of course more examples on different situations can be useful. If you truly understand the ideas, with some thinking, you recognize how to use them. Nice to have the last chapter where one can check the methods for each age, however in audiobook form not easy to find the right age as everything is in one chapter. I bought the physical book to add to my bookshelf so I can read it again to remind myself of the lessons. The book focuses quite much on families with siblings, but one child families are becoming more and more common, and not spoiling the one child can be difficult, the book didn't rely touch this, however not sure is it in the topic. Will read the authors "No drama discipline" book next, that might include that topic.

Great book overall
