Summary
For as long as Lottie Fiske can remember, the only people who seem to care about her have been her best friend, Eliot, and the mysterious letter-writer who sends her birthday gifts. But now strange things and people are arriving on the island Lottie calls home, and Eliot's getting sicker, with a disease the doctors have given up trying to cure. Lottie is helpless, useless, powerless.
And then a door opens in the apple tree.
Follow Lottie down through the apple roots to another world - a world of magic both treacherous and beautiful - in pursuit of the impossible: a cure for the incurable, a use for the useless, and protection against the pain of loss.
Book 1 in the spellbinding Water and the Wild fantasy trilogy.

The Water and the Wild
A well written and narrated story. This is perfect for all ages and one that I have used on long car journeys with my family and for a bedtime story that is done in stages inorder to give the children time to visualise and picture what they think could happen next.

Could have been Listening to Radio 4
This was my first foray into audiobook listening and I was not disappointed. The vivid descriptions of the passage of youth were thought provoking and brought back many memories of my own childhood, from taking dangerous pot shots at advertising boards, to exploring the old car dump at the end of our allotment. How innocent those actions seemed at the time with little thought to the harm we were doing. The interaction between characters is strong and gelled together perfectly by Nigel Peever's narration. The longer I listened the more I was drawn into the story, invested in the characters and eager to hear what happened next. Normally I have a very short attention span, but in this instance I lay back in my chair and let the narrator take me wherever the author wanted me to go. My abiding thought was that this production would not be out of place being aired on Radio 4,; serialised.
I was impressed throughout by the technical elements that went into the narration, particularly the sound layers, which complemented as opposed to distracted. Clever, very clever and added another dimension to an already good book. Minor fluctuations in character vocals did not distract in any way. As a narrator myself I struggle with adolescent and child voices, so I know how difficult it is to maintain the accent and pitch.
I will be looking out for more titles by this author and narrator

Wonderful!
The water and the Wild is a wonderful start to this new series.
Lottie getting her letters and birthday gifts after placing an apple in the tree is not only warmed my heart but made me believe in magic! Great title for kids/family...
I'm not usually a huge fan of FX within an audiobook, however this one was done quite well and not at all distracting like some! NIgel does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life and drawing you in. The story is excellent! I've had this book for some time and have been listening to it with my 8year old when she's in the truck with me, so it took a while to get through, but like clockwork, every time she got in my truck... "Daddy, are we going to finish water and the wild"...
With that said! I enjoyed this audiobook as well and found myself drawn in and having to stop myself from listening to it without her! A great pickup and great story. Highly recommended!

Magic, and mystery and danger, OH My
This book was given to me free of charge for an honest review.
This book is AMAZING! It reminds me of sitting in a circle in school while my favorite teacher read an exciting magical story to the class. It's about an orphan girl named Lottie, who lives in a boring town where she doesn't fit in at all. Her only friend is Elliot, who has a terrible disease, and her "magic" apple tree where gifts magically appear for her each year on her birthday. Suddenly Elliot's health takes a turn for the worst, and a series of events happen that flip Lottie's life completely upside down. She's taken to a magical world to find a cure for Elliot. What she finds instead is danger, creatures, and a few new friends. I absolutely loved this book, However, if you are not a fan of sound effects, which I don't mind, you may not want to get this one. Other than that, I highly recommend it.

I could not imagine it getting better than this! It was a fantastical journey through a magical world full of characters you can't help but love! I would reccomend this book to all! It is an experience that all should have! Nigel Peever did a magnificent job bringing this book to life with such emotion! The sound effects used only made this book better by truly giving life to the already amazing team up of Nigel Peever and K.E. Ormsbee!
