About this listen

From the bestselling author of the DI Amy Winter series comes a thriller about a shocking disappearance—and the village that has conspired to keep the truth buried.

Ten years ago, the Harper family disappeared. Their deserted cottage was left with the water running, the television playing cartoons, the oven ready for baking. The doors were locked from the inside.

Overnight, the sleepy village of Nighbrook became notorious as the scene of the unsolved mystery of the decade, an epicentre for ghoulish media speculation.

For crime journalist Naomi, solving the case has turned into an obsession. So now, with Ivy Cottage finally listed for sale, it’s her chance to mount an investigation like no other. And her husband and stepdaughter don’t really need to know what happened in their new home... do they?

But Nighbrook isn’t quite the village she expected. No one wants to talk to her. No one will answer her questions. And as she becomes increasingly uneasy, it’s clear that the villagers are hiding something—that there is something very dark at the heart of this rural idyll. And the deeper she digs, the more it seems her investigation could be more dangerous than she ever imagined... In raking up the secrets of the past, has she made her own family the next target?

Critic reviews

“Listeners are privy to some of the inner thoughts of characters, which is unsettling, and narrator Elizabeth Knowelden does a great job of portraying them in a chilling way.”Library Journal

“Be warned: Mitchell keeps digging deeper even after the main mystery is solved for more and more nasty revelations.”Kirkus Reviews

“A creepy read that ramps up the chill factor all the way to the end.”—Tariq Ashkanani, author of Welcome to Cooper

I'm a huge Caroline Mitchell fan, both of her books and her true crime YouTube channel and I just find that her books never disappoint. I love how Caroline truly writes from the heart about things she knows about, drawing on her experience as a policewoman and detective and all of the different people and walks of life she has encountered.
This book is absolutely fantastic. A solid story that twists and unfolds several times, believable characters, a good pace...what more could you ask for?
A brilliant stand alone thriller and a big thumbs up for excellent narration too 👍

LOVED THE TWISTS AND TURNS AT THE END 👌

A good book, well narrated, I enjoyed it but thought the end strung out a bit too much

I am returning this book as just so sloppily written and no visible sign of a badly needed editor.
Hmmm where to begin.
No spoilers but there is a character who is eager to get to sleep as although a Goth, still an early bird ... later on that character says she knows her stepmother will not disturb her until the afternoon as "knows she is a night owl".
Jeepers ... I mean I was so not into this book and I even spotted that glaring error - how come the author couldn't and no editor bothered to pick her up on it.
Yes I know a small and trifling matter which probably did not affect the plot - I did not bother to finish so in fairness I do not know but if it did ... even worse.
The premise was good of course as that is what made me choose it.
The old trope of the Mary Celeste style abandoned boat/house etc kettle on the boil, telly on and inhabitants missing.
Of course this is a fascinating proposition.
Then the trope of new stepmother versus resentful teenage step daughter
Less excited about this one and wow did it have a heavy handed pantomime treatment here,
Next the trope of marrying a glamorous millionaire, this time a Scottish Film Director or was it Producer - he seemed such a shadowy, undeveloped character he did not leave a big enough impression to recall that or indeed anything about him really, even what he looked like - but then I did not bother to listen to much of this old pot boiler.
I left the audiobook running and missed a large chunk and when I picked up again we were in flashback and meeting the missing family.
Well that was the final straw - absolutely so far fetched and unappealing I stopped right there.
I would warn anyone who has issues about mental illness or finds it triggering, this is not the book for them.
Neither is it a book for anyone who does not want to simply suspend disbelief but throw it completely like caution, to the four winds.
Wow .......... if you can imagine lace gloves could protect anyone from anything then perhaps this is the book for you, otherwise you will be wasting your time.
I did not want to know anymore or hear another word.
I am sure I have listened to another Caroline Mitchell audiobook and while it obviously must not have made a huge impression on me as I have no memory of it, it simply could not have been as dire as this one.
There are so many, many, many better mystery books than this one where at least the author or editor has made it seem like they actually give a hoot and are making an effort.
Keep scrolling it is not hard to find a better written book with less tired tropes and a less preposterous story line.
How this book got such rave reviews is more of a mystery than anything in it.
Just so annoyed I have to return another disappointing book.

Do editors even still exist as this book needed 1
