About this listen

A timeless classic - one of Jacqueline Wilson's Top Ten Books to Read Aloud. This is the story of the Velveteen Rabbit's journey towards becoming real - through the love of a child …

This gentle, beautiful recording is perfect for bedtime. It includes a story reading, soundtrack, and a song, all voiced by Samuel West.

This is a classic which is starting to show its age, rather like the worn velveteen rabbit himself. A very gentle story with bags of imagination about the secret life of toys, suitable for young children (though some references might need to be explained). Samuel West, as always, does a wonderful job with his skilful and emotive narration. The story itself lasts for 28 minutes, including the frequent over-loud but pleasant musical intervals.

The remainder is a reading of the modern addendum from a printed version of the book, including discussion of the original 1922 drawings which are presumably included in the picturebook version. So this second section isn't so successful - though it does include a rather delightful song about old toys sung by the talented West.

A dated, gentle story

It references for you to look at pictures in the book so I don't think this works very well as an audio book but the story was sweet and simple.

Extremely short book.

Soothingly read by Samuel West, but the narration is meant to go with the illustrated book. Lovely to have Sam West reading it if you have the book - otherwise it would be very frustrating for a child not to be able to see the pictures.

It is meant to have the illustrated book with it
