About this listen

The gifted filmmaker, corduroy activist and amateur dentist, Richard Ayoade, first chanced upon a copy of The Two-Hander Trilogy by Harauld Hughes in a second-hand bookshop. At first startled by his uncanny resemblance to the author's photo, he opened the volume and was electrified. Terse, aggressive, and elliptical, what was true of Ayoade was also true of Hughes's writing, which encompassed stage, screen, and some of the shortest poems ever published.

Ayoade embarked on a documentary, The Unfinished Harauld Hughes, to understand the unfathomable collapse of Hughes's final film O Bedlam! O Bedlam!, taking us deep inside the most furious British writer since the Boer War.

This is the story of the story of that quest.

Give me more! Fascinating world. I’d like biographies on many of the other characters now. Great listen. What an imagination!

Superb!

I have been a fan of Ayoade’s for years and have read his other work. I was expecting a more Kaufmanesque story, however this was still an overall enjoyable few hours. My one gripe is the interminable narration for Lady Lovilocke, whose monotonous voice and haughty intonations were almost impossible to listen to.

Let down by droning narration

I really liked this - at times laugh out loud funny, very cleverly written & the different actors/voices added to fun. Surprised by a couple of the reviews saying the opposite- the character’s voices brought this to life. Four hours of
Utter pleasure. Recommended

Very very funny

Interesting story with lots of humour. Great use of voice actors, brought the characters to life. I particularly enjoyed the classic David Mitchell rant!

Wonderfully quirky

This book goes nowhere and has an unfulfilled finale. I'd have liked to have got to knowmore about Howard Hughes too.

Wasn't sure what the point of this was
