About this listen

A thrilling tale of suspense from the CWA Diamond winner and bestselling author of the Roy Grace series.

'Britain's answer to Stephen King and Michael Crichton.' Sunday Telegraph

Susan and John Carter are crazy about each other and life is perfect but for one thing - they are on the brink of financial disaster. Surely being a surrogate mother to another man's child won't harm such a strong relationship? Especially when the mysterious Mr Sarotzini is offering to save their home and business - everything they've worked for.

What seems to be a perfect solution begins to feel like an impossible situation. Susan's pregnancy is disturbingly painful but no-one will tell her why. It becomes apparent that Sarotzini wields immense power and Susan begins to doubt everything she knows. As she realises the terrifying origin of the dark forces Saratzini controls she is in fear for herself and John but most of all for her unborn baby ...

Critic reviews

James has been compared with Stephen King, but in many ways he's better
'James has a gift for turning mind-stretching subjects into novels that are irresistibly readable as well as utterly believable.
So charged with menace that readers will find themselves glancing over their shoulder.

As the author acknowledges this story was inspired by Ira Levin's book Rosemary's Baby and there is a resemblance. I enjoyed the first two thirds of Truth as the plot thickens, but then the story flags and meanders about with too many emotional episodes by the main female character, Susan. In general the book would have benefited with editing to cut the length, especially the last third. It is interesting to be reminded how technology has moved on in the last twenty years since the book was written: remember faxing it seemed great at the time!
This audio version is greatly enhanced by the excellent dramatization by the narrator.

Derivative but mainly worth listening to

Ohh I feel bad writing this. I’ve loved all of Peter James’ other books but this is awful. So far fetched as to be distracting. An unsympathetic protagonist and a proper pantomime baddie make for a strangely dull story. Great narration though. He does a sterling job in the face of it!

Ludicrous yet predictable

Great narration. Awesome story. I love Peter Jame’s and am a big fan of his Roy Grace novels. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to listen to any if his books that weren’t Roy Grace but I’m so pleased I did. If you like the occult you’ll live this. I couldn’t stop listening till the end.

Loved it!

This was different subject matter than the usual Roy Grace books. It took a while to get into the story I would recommend it as I enjoyed it

Different from Peter James

Gripping story but a rushed ending, left me wondering what was going on, was Sarotzini the Deverill.

Good story
