About this listen
From the author of the Wicked Bay series, comes an angsty YA/NA enemies-to-lovers romance. Cocky football players, school rivalry, and the girls who get in their way. Get ready...the Raiders are coming!
Hailee Raine only has to survive one more year. One year of life in her football obsessed town. One year of nauseating school spirit. Just one more year of her cruel step-brother Jason; and his cocky, arrogant, football-playing friends.
She hates them. Especially, Cameron Chase, the guy she thought was different.
Cameron Chase has the world at his feet. He has it all; good looks, talent, and the charm to go with it. He has colleges lined up at the door, all wanting a piece of Rixon Raiders star wide receiver. Until something threatens everything he's ever worked for, and only one person can quiet the war raging inside him. But he's supposed to hate her; his best friend's sister.
She's off-limits. Untouchable. She's trouble with a capital T.
Then Hailee finds herself in the middle of a football prank gone wrong...and suddenly hating each other never felt so good.
The Trouble with You is the first book in The Rixon Raiders series. All books in this series can be listened to as stand-alones!

It was entertaining to see where boundary lines were drawn and crossed. Hailee found it fun to ‘poke the bear’ in essence and her stepbrother had a chip on his shoulder the size of Texas. The situation made it difficult for Hailee to connect with anyone outside of her bestie, much less her stepbrother’s best friend Cameron.
I liked how the relationship was developed. It went deeper than surface level. The conflict was well established and it lent itself to opening up plot lines for secondary characters. I’m definitely intrigued by what’s going to happen with the next couples in the series.
There was one point that was an issue for me. I won’t spoil but I’ll say that it was left largely unaddressed and it involved several acts that are very much illegal, not to mention moral implications. If it weren’t for that, it would’ve been a 5 ⭐️ from me.
The narrators, Sarah Puckett and Wen Ross, did a fantastic job. Their pace, tone, and pitch were complimentary to the story. They were emotive and a great match to the characters.
All in all an enjoyable read. Will continue the series for sure.

I actually enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I was going to. At first, it seemed it was going to be too high school drama for me, and while it definitely was, it worked. One of the reasons why it was so successful is because the outcomes were something very believable. With each action that happened, the characters responded in a way that I felt would be expected to. I really liked this because it kept the book at a good pace without feeling like it was trying too hard. The only aspect I had an issue with was that this was all high school. Maybe I just had a really lame high school experience or my high school was an anomaly but there were things that made me hard to believe it happened in high school. However, this did not limit my enjoyment of the book. I still liked the story and the outcomes that happened.
The dual point of view between Hailee and Cameron was perfect. I’m so glad that we were able to experience both sides to the story. It really helped me connect to each character fully. I loved how Hailee was a no non-sense girl. She continually stood up for herself and refused to let situations get the better of her. But she was still very human with her emotions. The only aspect I didn’t really like is how she treated Flick as she was exactly like her. There were moments where Hailee pointed out that Flick wanted to do “normal” high school things and she wasn’t because Flick was trying to be a good friend to Hailee. But then something would come up and Hailee spoke for her and lumped them into the decisions together. Regardless, it was a really great friendship and in the end they always supported each other, even if it meant making some sacrifices. In exchange, I was really pleased with Cameron’s development. I don’t think we would have completely understood his character without reading from his point of view. While he tries to maintain the “jock” exterior, he has so much more that he is actually dealing with. Both were a perfect pair and I loved the tension between them all.
Final Thoughts
Overall, The Trouble With You by L.A. Cotton was a very enjoyable YA romance novel. It had a very strong story line and really made it enjoyable with events that seemed realistic. While I had some issues with the actual content and it being high school, it didn’t really affect my enjoyment of the story (I was probably a boring HS student haha). The characters fit this story so well and honestly I liked them all. Creating a connection with Hailee and Cameron was so easy to do and the tension between them was perfect for the setting. I highly recommend this novel for anyone who is looking for a little more detailed romance book in the YA genre.
Audio Review
NOTE: The narration does not affect my rating of the book
Sarah Puckett and Wen Ross were perfect narrators for this novel. I really enjoyed the emotion each had put into their characters. The tension felt real, as well as all other circumstances throughout the story. I would definitely recommend this audio if you are interested in the story.
Definitely feel the tension
