About this listen
The Tree of Heaven follows the fortunes of the Harrison family as the children grow up in the shadow of the First World War and Dorothy's brothers go off to the trenches, while she becomes involved with the suffrage movement, and later joins a version of the Women's Social and Political Union.
©2020 May Sinclair (P)2021 Isis Publishing LtdThis is a fascinating novel of a family before and during WW1, great psychological accuracy of characterisation which is a real joy and not to be found much in better remembered authors of the same period: James Joyce, Ford Maddox Ford, who are often more concerned with lofty intellectual arguments and clever effects.
Jilly Bond's performance was good but sometimes gratingly twee which trivialised some of the characters - a different reading style would work better, her voice was far too 'jolly hockey' sticks and this diminished the writing.
A fairly ordinary family dealing with the huge changes wrought by war going from idyllic lives to something shattered.
Please, please provide more audiobooks of May Sinclair's work but with a different narrator who can give a more adult delivery.
