Summary

State Road 177 runs along the Suwannee River, between Fargo, Georgia, and the Okefenokee Swamp. Drive that route from east to west, and you'll cross six bridges. Take it from west to east, and you might find seven. But you'd better hope not. Titus and Melanie Bell leave their hotel in Fargo for a second honeymoon canoeing the Okefenokee Swamp. But shortly before they reach their destination, they draw up to a halt at the edge of a rickety bridge with old stone pilings, with room for only one car....

When, much later, a tow-truck arrives, the driver finds Titus lying in the middle of the road, but Davina is nowhere to be found.

Worth a listen

Easy listening. Well told, interesting story line. Didn’t and how I expected but glad it ended how it did.

Just like Mamma used to make

I had no idea how much I was missing a good old fashioned horror until I listened to this. The characters are full and compelling, the little swirls and eddies are interesting and mysterious, what’s left unsaid only adds to the story. The horror is horrifying. It’s not spoon fed to you in a way that feels patronising yet I doubt it would suffer from being inaccessible to anyone. It’s excellent.

The narrator has a skill elevated to magic - he manages to narrate in such a way that he entirely disappears and only the story is there.

Pay the Ghosts

I've read lots by Cherie Priest, enjoying them all. This one had been on my wishlist for a long time but the first I've listened to rather than read.

The narrator does a great job in bringing the characters to life; I've struggled a lot in the past with otherwise great stories being let down by poor narration, but I'm happy to report that this is not true of this book.

The story itself is as you would expect from this author; a perfect blend of horror, mystery, and action that offers the potential to have more from the same universe as either prequels or sequels. I would love to hear more of the backstory from some of the characters (and how the bridge came to be there originally).

super Suspense story with a twist

I love Cherie Priest works anyway one of the things I love about her work is that you never really know in which direction her books go and this one turned and twisted in brilliant ways
