About this listen

"A fiendishly clever tale of ambition, deception, and power." (Derren Brown)

A chilling debut teeming with spirits, séances, and scandal – the must-listen novel for this spooky season.

Belfast, 1914. Two years after the sinking of the Titanic, high society has become obsessed with spiritualism, attending séances in the hope they might reach their departed loved ones.

William Jackson Crawford is a man of science and a sceptic, but one night with everyone sitting around the circle, voices come to him – seemingly from beyond the veil – placing doubt in his heart and a seed of obsession in his mind. Could the spirits truly be communicating with him or is this one of Kathleen's parlour tricks gone too far?

Based on the true story of Professor William Jackson Crawford and famed medium Kathleen Goligher, and with a cast of characters including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini, The Spirit Engineer conjures a haunted, twisted tale of power, paranoia, and one ultimate, inescapable truth....

Everyone is talking about The Spirit Engineer

"Haunting, witty and deeply moving." (Jodie Whittaker)

"So clever it makes your head spin! The Spirit Engineer is a work of true invention and drama." (Jeremy Vine)

What a clever book. I won’t give any spoilers but I was delighted at the conclusion of this tale. It’s expertly narrated as well, will look out for more books from Dickon Farmar.
I didn’t know it was based on a true tale and having a keen interest in this topic, I was to some degree elated then disappointed then elated in turn all the way through , with the twists.
Highly recommended. Makes you think :-)

And totally not my thing! This is one of those books where I can absolutely appreciate why other people loved it. If you like creepy stories with unsympathetic characters then it’s very cleverly plotted and written and you’ll love the ending. I didn’t but there you go.

Well written and intelligent

What a rush. Amazing smart story with totally unexpecting twists that leaves you completely bewildered. What a ride!!! Cannot wait for his second novel. The narration of Dickon Farmar was mezmerizing.

An absolute amazing story

The book starts off slow, and I was a little confused to be honest, thinking I'd got the book confused with another. I'm glad I persisted though, as this had me gripped to the very end. The twists keep coming. Excellent narration too - some people can do one Irish accent, but Dickon was doing about 20 clear, distinct Irish characters.

Gripped to the end!
