Summary
Tanya Byron shares powerful stories inspired by her years of training as a clinical psychologist. The Skeleton Cupboard is professor Tanya Byron's account of her years of training as a clinical psychologist, when trainees find themselves in the toughest placements of their careers.
Through the eyes of her naive and inexperienced younger self, Tanya shares remarkable stories inspired by the people she had the privilege to treat. Gripping, poignant, and full of daring black humour, this book reveals the frightening and challenging induction faced by all mental health staff and highlights their incredible commitment to their patients.
Powerfully moving and beautifully written, The Skeleton Cupboard shares the tales of ordinary people with an amazing resilience to the challenges of life.

One of the most memorable moments of The Skeleton Cupboard was when Tanya was working with the 12 year old girl who wanted to die and they get to the root of the reason for this.
Which character – as performed by Imogen Church – was your favourite?
Tanya
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes
Any additional comments?
Tanya's writing style and empathic portrayal of her patients reminds me of the brilliance and compelling narrative from Irvin Yalom. I very much hope that she will write more to represent her clinical experiences.

Written from an interesting viewpoint
I loved the frank recognition that psychologists are only human and that they are fallible.
The stories with the main story were also quite believable and moving.

Fantastic story
I found this gripping and informative as a counsellor working with adults, children and adolescents. I realised the work we do isn’t that different although there always seems a divide between counsellors and psychologists. It was fascinating to get to know the varied and interesting characters and the performance brought the whole book to life. The raw honesty and reflections of Tanya Byron adds to her credibility and expertise as a Psychologist.Highly Recommended.

inspiring read
As an aspiring psychologist I was absolutely gripped from beginning to end. I loved the message of narrative that shone through and the systemic issues that are very prevalent. I appreciated the personal accounts and genuine struggles that were depicted! loved it!

Needs redoing!
Love the story and intrigue of Tanya’s journey BUT the attempted ’accents’ by the reader are terrible and off putting. Tanya re do it by reading it yourself. Love you!

A honest humanistic stance on human behaviour in a training clinical setting
For those who like me are constantly fascinated by the realms of human behaviour so are dedicating their lives to a route of psychology to further that fascination and hopefully help. Look no further! Or if you enjoy learning about psychology also look no further. For this book which of course are based on Tanya Byron’s training offers a unique experience of sitting in on although fictionalised events based on real stories and the reality we face in mental health.
Since this book came out in 2015 and I read it, it has gripped me to my core to look at the world in a different way so I encourage you if you dare to listen and keep and open mind for only then can you truly sit in the protagonist views and get a glimpse of this experience. I feel honoured and grateful that Tanya Byron who has accomplished so much chose to write and publish this piece, it offers fresh minds like mine a way to move forward and view people differently.
So yes I rate it 5 stars read excellently, and written well I recommend you take your time with this and listen at your own pace. Aside from that enjoy ! A throughly interesting and entertaining piece of writing!
