About this listen

Six women. Six abductions. Six souls in peril...

London is in the grip of a barbaric serial killer, dubbed Herod by the tabloid press. Four pregnant women have been abducted in quick succession, their bodies mutilated and dumped. When a fifth pregnant woman, Julia Caton, is taken from her home in the dead of night, DCI David Rosen knows that time is running out to save her... Then Rosen gets a mysterious phone call from Father Sebastian Flint, an enigmatic priest who seems to know rather too much about the abductions. When it emerges that Father Flint was once the Vatican's leading expert on the occult, the investigation takes an increasingly disturbing turn. But it isn't until Rosen discovers the existence of an ancient text - said to be the devil's answer to the bible - that the true horror of Herod's plan begins to unfold. Rosen is drawn inexorably to the killer's lair, where he will discover a terrible truth - that Herod's retribution is absolute, and that there are far worse things than death...

Mark Roberts was born and raised in Liverpool and was educated at St. Francis Xavier's College. He was a teacher for twenty years and he received a Manchester Evening News Theatre Award for best new play of the year. The Sixth Soul is his first novel for adults.

Joe Jameson is a great narrator and has done justice to this perfectly scripted book. Well done Mark Roberts and Joe Jameson. Looking forward to more from the author. And of course, more from Mr Joe Jameson.

This should be a movie!

A damaged detective hunts a serial killer. Nothing new there, but the story, with it's gruesome killings and damaged detective, is solid enough. But it didn't quite live up to the hype, though I will give the second book in the series a try.

I was recently searching for a new author and was pleased to discover Mark Roberts. The authors first novel, The Sixth Soul kept me engrossed from beginning to end. As a big fan of crime novels, I was extremely impressed with this book and I am now eagerly awaiting the authors next instalment.

In my opinion, this book is a 5 * listen and a must read for any fan of crime fiction.

A Great Read

As soon as I finished this I went to look for others in the series, only to find with surprise that this was the first. I've read all John Connolly's Charlie Parker series, so if like me you enjoyed those you'll enjoy this. Not quite as dark and graphic, but still with a strong spiritual element - with undertones of satanism. I really bought into the main characters and was calling out loud at the book towards the end. The reader was good, although not convinced by the female character voices - I sometimes wish produces of audio books would employ a female voice for dialogue, it didn't spoil the story as I eventually got used to it and was able to suspend my disbelief - now when is the next one out I can't wait!!!

Great First Novel

This was an ok listen but overall I found the plot very predictable and some of the writing quite forced/unnatural. Additionally, I found the narrator a little annoying if I'm honest. The voices of the various characters, both male and female, ended up sounding like comedy caricatures. Not the worst listen but light years away from the best in my opinion.

Ok but....
