I try generally to read a book before seeing the film, this is one of the instances where I saw the film first. It has to be said that I really liked the film and so I was really keen to have a go at the book, though there are some quite enormous differences between the two. The relationships between the characters are huge and the role of Pat’s father (which was quite significant in the film) scarcely features in the book.

The story focuses to a great extent on American football and I have to admit that I found this fairly boring though that most likely is due to the fact that I have almost no interest in sports, though it forms a fairly significant part of the story and is not really something that can be ignored very easily.

Generally the story is entertaining enough though sadly I found the film to be much better.

Average story, though the film was better

I think this is better than the film script and the performance was fantastic. Thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook.

Amazing story brilliantly read

First of all. Ray Porter, the narrartor. He takes a story and makes it so much better. His mastery of each character, tone, speed and emotion and pausing makes listening A must-do event. He narrated another book I listened to 14, and took a good story and made it brilliant.

Aaaaah, those sublime tones of Kenny G-Songbird. Or, Aaaaargh, those sublime tones of Kenny G-Songbird. E-A-G-L-E-S. The stomach-master 6000 and how this helps pat deal with difficult thoughts and emotions.
What a brilliant story that sucks you in. I won't do the usual plotline review, but the characters like Dr Clive and his genius and intuitively caring way he helps Pat, The descriptions of Pat and how he views life after being interned and suffering from Bi-polar disorder and how that gradually changes through his experiences with people and situations. The Eagles football team and belonging. Why songbird causes Pat so much pain and him making sense of it all as his memories are re-built.

I have wondered, just how the film was handled considering the imaginary sequences etc.

Loved it! Tad repetitive at times... but the audio performance and story line make up for it!

Feel good read which portrays mental health amicably.

"The Stomach Master 6000..."

A great uplifting, humour filled read.

I had seen the film several years ago and loved it but the book captures so much more of what they are both going through. I loved it. Thank you Matthew!
