Story
A dead body in the prayer hall of a mosque isn't the best start to the day for anyone. But for Detective Inspector Harold Porter it's all in a day's work. The problem is that DI Porter has been given a new partner - a young Muslim detective by the name of Mohammed Salim Nasri. Nasri and Porter are both British and both cops, but they look at the world - and the case - from completely different viewpoints. And when that case includes Islamic terrorists and knife-wielding fanatics that can only mean problems.

Summary
Sunday Times best-selling author Stephen Leather's latest edge-of-your-seat thriller.
A stand-alone thriller from Sunday Times best-selling author Stephen Leather that takes us into the world of the London Fire Brigade's elite Investigations Unit.
Vicky Lewis is a force to be reckoned with: not yet 30 and already Crew Manager in the London Fire Brigade, she's destined for great things. But when she enters a burning building to save a man's life and leaves it with catastrophic injuries, all that changes. She's shunted over to the Fire Investigation Unit, where she's forced to team up with cantankerous veteran Des Farmer, aka the Grouch. When Vicky stumbles across the Grouch's off-the-books investigation into the fiery deaths of a series of young, blonde women, she decides to join him in his search for the truth.
The answer is close - perhaps too close. Vicky's already been burnt once, and now she's playing with fire....

Sizzling!
Great story, full of facts about fires and fire fighting but not boring. I worked out who ‘dunnit’ earlier on than I think I was supposed to, but I do listen to a lot of crime novels!
I enjoyed it enough to stay up late when I should have been getting lots of sleep before a busy day. It was worth it!

Great story , loved the fact we had a hereoin and not all glamous . Didn't want to miss a word, if I fell asleep I would have to start the chapter again, too good to miss any of it. Also loved the wonderful lady reading the story. Different to much of Stephen's work but so so good. Not one bit disappointed.

More, please!
Thoroughly enjoyable. Fire fighter turned fire investigator, Vicky is a great new heroine for, hopefully, more thrillers like this. Stephen Leather is a super author, engaging his audience from first to last. I only guessed the villain late in the story, so was rapt throughout. Loved “The Grouch” and his part in the tale and his interactions with Vicky. A good combo for future stories, I hope!

Well paced action and believable characters.
Stephen Leather created believable characters and scenarios in this well paced read.
I loved the uncomplaining lead character and the sense of danger and fallibility. The determination to succeed in a male environment and the relationships that she was able to build.
I’d love to read more stories featuring this character. So good to have a female lead role and well read by Bea Holland.

Something different
I had avoided reading this book for a while. Having finished I'm really not sure why. I liked the way the story developed, several different plots, the banter between the lead characters and the dark and terrible effects fire can have on life. I also liked the portrayal of the heroine. The bravery of firefighters cannot be underestimated particularly if those firefighters are women. Great story which I am sure will be enjoyed !!!

Another brilliant read from Stephen Leather! Realistic characters - I love the female lead - and enough technical info to make everything believable (to someone who knows nothing about it, anyway!). I sincerely hope this becomes the first of a new series👍.
