About this listen

Pushkin was one of the giants of 19th century Russian literature but, unlike Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, he was most famous for his short stories. In a little town, a group of army officers befriend a man named Silvio, who drinks copious amounts of Champagne and enjoys shooting up his room with a pistol. One day during a game of cards, Silvio and a newly transferred officer get into an argument. The proper conclusion in such a situation is a duel, but Silvio declines because he has bigger fish to fry - he’s out to exact vengeance on a man for an offense committed six years prior. Walter Zimmerman delivers a fine performance in a clear voice, inhabiting the world created by Russian writer Alexander Pushkin with ease.
