Critic reviews

‘Iron kings and strangled queens, battles and betrayals, lies and lust, the curse of the Templars, the doom of a great dynasty – and all of it (well, most of it) straight from the pages of history, and believe me, the Starks and the Lannisters have nothing on the Capets and Plantagenets. Whether you are a history buff or a fantasy fan, Druon's epic will keep you turning pages. This was the original game of thrones’
GEORGE R.R. MARTIN

‘Blood-curdling tale of intrigue, murder, corruption and sexual passion’
SUNDAY TIMES

‘Barbaric, sensual, teeming with life, based in wide reading and sound scholarship…among the best historical novels’ TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT

Peter Joyce did a great job of bringing all of the characters in the novel to life.

Great Narration

I've listened to (or read) these books in sequence. They are good fun, but the history is a bit dodgy (as is usual with an historical novel). Perhaps it will spur people to read some serious histories of the period. This is certainly not what you'd call fine literature (compare Hilary Mantel), but it does the job I suppose. There are passages where he does give a good impression of what it must have been like to live in the first half of the 14th century. Whenever people wax lyrical about so-called Judeo-Christian values I think of periods like this when Christianity completely dominated Europe and all of society. These times were cruel, savage, and profoundly ignorant. I am pleased I live in a time when religion is on the retreat (at least in Europe!). I recently listened to the genius that was Timothy West read the Trollope novels. Perhaps I was expecting too much. The reader has good dictation, but he has a very limited number of voices which he uses for the various characters, so it gets a bit stale.

Good fun, but the history is a bit dodgy.
