I apologize for my brash title. Disclaimer: There is nothing wrong with troubled youth. How to handle and navigate them and their emotions is another thing. This audiobook is extremely thorough and detailed. I like the statistics and depth that were put into explaining how the brain and neurons work for those whom we outwardly view as different or troubled. This definitely gave me more insight and some ideas on how I can better interact with children and those who do have these disorders and differences. It won't be my first or last time caring for or being in the presence of children or adults with the listed above factors, and having had read /listened to this book has helped, and I wish I looked into something similar sooner.

I am a trained tutor with no formal background in adolescent behavior issues and how those types of issues might impede learning and socializing within the class. This was a very well-presented source for the topic, and introduced me to the difference between sensory-seeking and sensory-avoidant behaviors. In children, the differences describe how a child’s nervous system responds to sensory input (sound, touch, movement, light, etc.). These are not diagnoses by themselves, but patterns commonly seen in children with sensory processing challenges, ADHD, autism, anxiety, or learning differences. A sensory-seeking child’s brain needs more input to feel regulated and alert. They may actively seek movement, touch, sound, or pressure. On the other hand, a sensory-avoidant child’s nervous system overreacts to sensory input. Everyday classroom sensations may feel overwhelming or even painful. Understanding these behaviors better now, I can make more informed adaptations to lesson plans. Children are individuals, however, so what works or helps one child may not work or be appropriate to the other. Patience and experimentation are key.

Wonderfully written and packed full of helpful information. The author does an incredible job explaining sensory issues and helping those who deal with them. The narrator is clear and warm, making the listening experience nice to listen to. It’s not dry in the least which makes it easy to absorb the information while not feeling like nodding off. Great book!

This handbook is a great tool to help parents define sensory processing. Teaches you what sensory processing even is and about the eight sensory symptoms. Gives insight on the relationship between Sensory Processing disorder, Autism Spectrum disorder, and Attention-deficit Hyperactivity disorder. Certain food chemicals can trigger sensory reactions and this book goes into detail about all the food chemicals to avoid.
