Story
If you had to pick five people to sum up your life, who would they be? If you were to raise a glass to each of them, what would you say? And what would you learn about yourself, when all is said and done? This is the story of Maurice Hannigan, an Irish farmer. Over the course of a Saturday night in June, he orders five drinks at the Rainsford House Hotel, and with each he toasts a key person from his life: his adored older brother; his troubled sister-in-law; his daughter of 15 minutes; his son far off in America; and his late, much missed wife.

"I'll tell you something, something important. Love is a decision. Not a feeling. That's what you young people don't realise. That's why you're always off divorcing each other. No offence, dear." So decrees the formidable Connie Thrum of Scribbly Gum Island. She is the chief decision-maker of a rather unconventional family and her word is law. It's been over seventy years since Connie and her sister Rose visited their neighbours and found the kettle boiling and a baby waking for her feed, but no sign of her parents.

Summary
Three generations of women. Secrets in the present and from the past. A captivating tale of life, loss, and love...
Neva Bradley, a third-generation midwife, is determined to keep the details surrounding her own pregnancy - including the identity of the baby's father - hidden from her family and co-workers for as long as possible. Her mother Grace finds it impossible to let this secret rest. The more Grace prods, the tighter Neva holds to her story, and the more the lifelong differences between private, quiet Neva and open, gregarious Grace strain their relationship.
For Floss, Neva's grandmother and a retired midwife, Neva's situation thrusts her back 60 years in time to a secret that eerily mirrors her granddaughter's - one which, if revealed, will have life-changing consequences for them all. As Neva's pregnancy progresses and speculation makes it harder and harder to conceal the truth, Floss wonders if hiding her own truth is ultimately more harmful than telling it.
Will these women reveal their secrets and deal with the inevitable consequences? Or are some secrets best kept hidden?

room for improvement
The book is probably better read than listened too. the narrator made all the characters in their 30s sound like young teenagers and it was difficult to keep track of which characters she was reading. Overall the book has enough twists to keep it interesting.

great book and glimpse into the daily lives and struggles of midwives! This is especially true if you understand the importance and relevance midwives play in childbirth! it's important to note that this book takes place today, not in the past! midwives are still very active in the childbirth community! i prefer them to obgyns any day!

Your Average good story to kill time with.
It was a good story, just nothing really remarkable about it. I did find it annoying that the reader read all three parts in the same voice, if you missed hearing the name at the beginning, you had no clue who you were listening to. Btw, while Grace may have had some accent due to her mother's speech, Neva would have no such thing at all being 2nd generation. All in all, it was a disappointment.

Could not listen to the narrator
I think the storyline might be good - I honestly couldn't take the narrator's voice. She talks in that little girl voice that is like nails on a chalkboard. I tried to get past it and I enjoy Sally Hepworth - please re-record this with another narrator

I’ve enjoyed Sally Hepworth’s books but this one was just ok for me
I’ve listened to all of Sally Hepworth’s books and I’ve always appreciated how her stories gradually unfold. This one wasn’t as good as her others. The narrator’s voice for the daughter sounded like a 5 year old, but I did think she did a decent job with the men’s voices. Sally’s other books use a different narrator who is great! I might of liked this book more with her as a narrator.

meh
The narrator is not good. Her voices for women are too similar, too high, too babyish. I do know one woman who talks like this...only one. I finished this book. I didn't return it. I wonder if I would have enjoyed it more if I read it instead of listened to it. I have enjoyed books by this author but this is not really very good.

Wonderful story, especially for birth lovers.
This book captivated me from the beginning, and I finished it too quickly because I listened to it non-stop. It is a fantastic story for everyone, birthworker or not. As a doula and midwife in training it added a whole other level.
