About this listen

‘Truly gripping… I loved it.’ Jill Mansell, Sunday Times bestseller

A heartbreakingly beautiful novel which captures the endurance and strength of ordinary people in the darkest of times, and the courage of one woman who put her life on the line to join the resistance. Perfect for fans of The Nightingale and The Secret Messenger.

1944, the Cote d’Azur.
Artist Marguerite Segal is recruited by British Intelligence into befriending Etienne Valade, a local priest. Her mission is to persuade him to pass on information from the high-ranking German officers who attend his church: evidence of their war crimes.

Connected by a passion for art, Marguerite and Etienne soon fall in love, but their association increasingly puts her at danger of violent reprisals. With his church frequented by Nazis, Etienne is a suspected collaborator, and distrust is high.

And Marguerite is keeping her own secret too. Like the Jews whose identity cards she forges to hide them from the Third Reich, she is hiding behind a false name, her true identity and past known only to her closest friend.

Marguerite must get hold of the documents that will condemn the German officers but, in a world where everything is at stake, can she truly trust anyone – even the man she loves?

I did enjoy this book very much. It wasn't full of action, just an account ( although fiction)of what a middle aged British woman experienced during the second world war. She was an artist and just by selling her work( everyone in France during the occupation of the Germans were close to starvation) so this lady sold her work just to survive the pathetic rations the residents of France were having to live by. There were lots of punishments of many innocents including youngsters barely adults being hung for something they had no influence over as a deterrent to tow the very strictest of laws implemented on them all. Margaret, the main character was part of the resistance, a very crucial but high risk to anyone brave enough to do so. Unfortunately the villagers got the wrong end of the stick thinking she thought the Germans as friends which was totally different from what she was actually doing which by spying and finding crucial evidence of the enemies forthcoming plans to sabotage things and bring an end to the war. She couldn't speak up for herself as she couldn't bring unwanted attention to herself. To summarise it was a great easy listen that flowed together nicely.

Just an easy to listen book

A must listen to audio book. It is set on the Cote d'Azur during the German occupation in 1944 just before the invasion by the Allies. The story describes a very different place to today's glamorous and fashionable setting.

It is a love story, with the backdrop of WW2, between an English artist recruited as a British spy and a french priest. There is constant threat to life not only from the German occupiers but from the local French people who are conflicted just to survive and it brings out the best or the worst in people under duress. Not everyone is who they seem to be and you do not always know whose side people are on.

Beautifully read and you must listen to the end.

This was so beautifully written and narrated. I felt so invested in the main characters that I was genuinely sad to see it end. Will definitely look for more from this author.
