Between the two men is a tragic past, a failed mission, and a woman who knew them in war - and who knows their secrets now. Around both men is a conspiracy of lies and violence that reaches back to the Cold War. But as Beg moves in for his kill and as Chardy breaks loose from his handlers, a terrible truth begins to emerge: somewhere, someone wants both men to die.
©2010 Stephen Hunter (P)2010 Brilliance Audio, Inc.I find this to be my favourite of his novels as the protagonist Paul Chardy goes on a redemption arc that is not particularly easy or enjoyable but believable and cathartic.
The plotting is intricate enough to warrent multiple listenings as it centres on a denouement that I felt was brilliant on my first reading.
The narration is delivered very well with plenty of character and naunce. It really captures the urban environment and historic setting.
Overall I would highly recommend this story for those who would like to hear a more raw and brutal story from Stephen Hunter.
Well worth a listen.
