About this listen

"The body you are wearing used to be mine." So begins the letter Myfanwy Thomas is holding when she awakes in a London park surrounded by bodies all wearing latex gloves. With no recollection of who she is, Myfanwy must follow the instructions her former self left behind to discover her identity and track down the agents who want to destroy her. She soon learns that she is a Rook, a high-ranking member of a secret organization called the Checquy that battles the many supernatural forces at work in Britain.

She also discovers that she possesses a rare and deadly supernatural ability of her own. Filled with characters both fascinating and fantastical, The Rook is a richly inventive, suspenseful fantasy. An astonishing debut from a brilliant new voice.

The Rook's been one of my favourite books of the last five years. Yes, it's silly and yes, the story resolves rather too conveniently, but it hangs together well and is brilliantly sardonic.

The Audible reading simply isn't as good as the book. Too many "funny" voices, and the pacing is rather pedestrian. In truth, if I wasn't already such a fan of the book, I'd have struggled to get all the way through the audio.

It's not terrible, but the book deserves better.

Love the book, but the audio is less convincing

It’s a fun romp, despite the flaws identified by other reviewers, which make the book grate in places. The biggest issue though is the narrator. I’m sure that Katy Carmichael would go down well with under 5s but the grossly exaggerated voices simply don’t work and spoil the book completely. Ms Carmichael would benefit from listening to the fantastic Zara Ramm for a masterclass in how to narrate a book with comedic overtones without making it sound like the Gruffalo.

Really wanted to like this, but...

A great story and brilliant narrator. Made me laugh numerous times, would definitely recommend this book.

A grown up Fantastic Beasts. Surprisingly Wonderful!!!

This was a very gripping story from the start. Like a lot of mysteries, it struggled a bit in the second act, trying to keep the story going in the right direction, but rapidly recovered. Highly recommended.

Very good story, excellent narration

I got this book as I had enjoyed the the TV adaptation. quick warning if you're expecting the book version off the TV show you're going to be wrong much of the storyline is different but I greatly enjoyed it. in fact the many differences between the book and the series actually enhanced my enjoyment of the book. overall the performance of the book was very good, admittedly the narrator wasn't great at doing male voices ( but once you got used to it, it wasn't that bad). yet overall her performance is great.

dear you, this is really excellent book
