About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A transformational quest for the secrets of happy, healthy, whole-life running that will change the way you think about growing older.

Colourful, informative and inspiring, The Race Against Time is a story of cold science and heart-warming resilience; of champions and also-rans; of sprinting centenarians and forty-something super-athletes barely touched by age. Its heroes are experts and enthusiasts - scientists, coaches, runners - from many countries, each with a different story to tell.

This is a book for anyone who has ever felt the healing power of running – or simply wondered about the effects of ageing. It is both a very personal account of one man's journey from despair to hope, and an exhilarating guide, explaining how timely adjustments to lifestyle and training can slow the progress of physiological decay, while sheer human spirit can, if you are lucky, keep you running happily and healthily, all the way into extreme old age.

This book at times looks as if it’s about international masters running. Which in a sense it is. But in fact it’s a touching exploration of mortality, philosophical and inspiring. Thank you to Richard for writing it.

A treat to listen to especially if you have any interest in running. Truly inspiring and makes you want to just keep on running! Everyone over 40 should read this, take note and act on it. As a physiotherapist I can’t recommend highly enough!

An inspiring listen!

I did enjoy listening to Richard and found him encouraging and depressing at the same time! Being a fell-runner in a previous life and once again taking up the baton of hill training again in my late sixties, I can see that there’s still some hope before the grim reaper calls my name! Thanks Richard!!

I enjoyed feet in the clouds and the thoroughly enjoyed this. It has got me inspired to run and possibly race again after a catalogue of event zapped all my energy & enthusiasm to do something that I have had so much enjoyment from. I will go up an age group this year but feel I can accept I will no longer be winning. There are so many amazing people in this book to inspire you and make you think again.

Race Against Time treads the line well between acknowledging the pitfalls of late life running versus highlighting the overwhelming benefits both to physical and mental health. Laugh out loud moments, mixed with touching true life accounts of how running has shaped the course of normal mid to late life runners and given them purpose, elite success and something to live for. It even contains a philosophical element, as you contemplate your own mortality in this running tales - I got much more from this than I was expecting from a running book!

Thought-provoking and inspirational
