Summary
Our health is in crisis and so is our climate.
What if there was a way of eating that may help us live healthier for longer and protect the future of our planet, too?
The good news is that evidence now shows a plant-based diet may offer us exactly that - and straight-talking nutritionist Simon Hill has done the hard work translating the science into actionable advice for everyday life.
Before transitioning to a plant-based diet, Simon held many of the common misconceptions. But instead he experienced incredible improvements in his energy levels, digestion, mental clarity and post-workout recovery after making the shift. He’d finally understood the power of food and was determined to find out - and share - the agenda-free truth about the optimum diet for human health.
By undertaking a master’s degree in nutrition, poring over the latest scientific papers and books and producing hundreds of hours of his internationally successful Plant Proof podcast, Simon has pursued the answers to all the questions he had about fuelling our bodies with more plants. Now, in his first book, he brings it all together into one inspiring and practical guide.
It covers:
- The reasons why we’re all so confused about what to eat.
- The evidence showing how a plant-based diet might reduce risks of heart attacks and strokes, type 2 diabetes, cancer and dementia.
- The positive impact of plant-based living for the climate and animal welfare.
- Common myths about a plant-based diet - and what the real facts are.
- How to build a healthy, satisfying plant-based plate, from macronutrients to micronutrients.
- Practical tips for making the shift, and much more.
If you want to understand and unlock the many benefits of putting more plants on your plate, this book is for you.

Great introduction to Plant based eating
It’s a great introduction and very thorough. I can’t take anything away from this book. Great science, all fact based and pragmatic advice, the last section on applying it all is well worth the book alone.

Brilliant and full of research
This is a really great book. I love the way everything is backed up with loads of research and statistics so it’s not just someone spouting their opinion. Even though it’s very in depth at times, it’s presented in such a way that feels easy to follow and understand. The main thing I appreciate though is how non judgmental Simon is. He encourages you to make healthy choices but seems far more realistic about accepting that we sometimes will eat some less than ideal food, because that’s just life!
Really excellent narration, superb content, and the pdf download is well presented too.

Amazing listening ...
So much in depth information about the gut microbiome, and how and what we can do, to ensure we're getting the best we can from our microbes. I found it easy listening and not technically challenging to understand. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about how our microbiome can serve us best. AAA****

Informative & inspiring without hyperbole.
I've read a lot of nutrition books and this is one of the very best. It lays out the evidence (with over 1000 references) on healthy and sustainable eating but never exaggerates the interpretation. Hill advocates for a plant-predomenant diet (as do virtually all health authorities and environmental organisations) but he's not preachy; he has the tone of a coach.
There's loads of interesting and practical information. He gives a good sense of how we know and the strength of evidence.
I've seen one Audible review criticise him for relying too much on epidemiology, but actually he references many random control trials, and throughout looks for conveeging lines of evidence from multiple types of study, which is exactly how nutrition science works.
I'd recommend this book to anyone hoping to eat better, no matter what "better" means to you.

Not scientific
So many issues with this book. People who say it’s backed by science don’t know what science is. Simon himself says epidemiology is less than ideal but then uses it to back everything he says with conviction. Regurgitation of vegan narrative that attempts to sound convincing.

Vegan propaganda
Too much of the same. Very unfortunate, was really looking forward to a more balanced discussion.

Compelling
This is clearly a well researched and scientifically backed piece of work. It is yet more proof that my new plant based lifestyle is the right choice for the planet, the animals and myself. I can't really believe it took so long for the penny to drop, but drop it has.

Outstanding - everything is covered & totally scientifically.
As comprehensive & scientific as can be yet in plain English for everyone to understand & implement. All based on latest research and over a thousand scientific studies are referenced to compliment what’s being said and taught. I was very surprised it ticked all of my boxes easily & I’ve been following many different experts in their field for years. Can’t recommend this book enough, it will help in countless & excellent ways.
