The day my path crossed with Simon Fox I thought I’d already lost everything, but then he almost ran me off the road with his flash car and belittling jibes. The men in my life had undermined me for too long. Enough was enough. Fuelled by alcohol and the desire to get even, I decided a spot of petty vandalism would make me feel a whole lot better. Wrong. Very wrong. I hadn’t realised that Simon Fox was not a man to be messed with.

But occult investigators are in short supply in the PD, so what are you going to do? Anyway, we just caught a body-snatching case that has the stench of occult workings all over it. Seems someone wants to summon something bad into this world, something that threatens the very fate of humanity. I could care less about the fate of humanity myself, but hey, when it’s your job, you gotta do something, right?

Intriguing but did rather go on and ruined by sfx
I did not make it to the end of this book and am returning as though the story was good with plenty of twists and I liked the way it encompassed the earlier "The One" which I really enjoyed.
But for anyone who likes to listen in the evening as a way to unwind I found the many and varied music stings which started off a lot the chapters really jarred especially as many of them sounded like ring tones and just as I was about to really relax ARGHHHHH another sound effect jolted me back to full alert.
So I am not sure if it was because it rattled my nerves as the last thing I want to hear when I am trying to wind down is a cacophony of ring tone like music stings, or if it just seemed to be very drawn out, far too implausible or it was just a bit dark for me but I just lost interest. I really liked "When you disappeared", Her Last Move" and "The One" and I would try another John Marrs book but for whatever reason it became plodding for me plus irritating sfx.
I did think the rest of the production was excellent and loved the narration by Kristin Atherton, Roy McMillan, Tom Bateman, Patience Tomlinson and Shaheen Khan but not so much the other female narrator who I always find a bit irritatingly too goody two shoesy.
Bottom line, if you like really relaxing and drifting off listening to an audio book - this is not an audio book I would recommend.

Five star audible
This is the fourth John Marrs book I have listened to on audible.
He is a talented writer and each books gets you thinking about the not to distant future or what ifs.
I would not want to compare John Marrs to other authors, however there is a slight similarity with Luke Smitherds writing.
Anyway I digress........ I could not stop on the first day listening to 5.5 hours straight. The next day I I found myself having to slow down, mainly because I did not want it to end. However equally desperate to find out the outcome.
The book summary says it all so no spoilers,. It’s a gripping novel probably better read after his other book The one, the content of which is mentioned in this book.
All the narrators were exemplary and thank you for bringing the book to life.
Personally I find audible is that middle ground between book and film.

Buckle Yourself in for a Bumpy Ride!
Set in a not-too-distant-future, Britain is now seeing self-drive cars on our roads every day, they are the saviour of our highways, as they help the environment, as well as cutting down traffic jams, they can see possible problems ahead, so will take alternative routes.
You can just get in the car, and relax, maybe sit and read the daily paper, maybe finish putting on your make-up, or because the windows turn opaque and let you play videos, you can sit and scroll through Facebook and Twitter on the way to work...Sounds great right?
And it is, everyone has embraced the future, except some, some people really don't like these cars at all!
Libby is one of these people, she is called for jury duty, but not for what you think, these juries consist of just one member of the public, and they are held in secret to discuss accidents involving Driverless cars, and also to determine who (or what) is at fault.
Headed by the obnoxious MP Jack, the trial is in full swing when the hacker joins the conversation, and he makes it clear very quickly who is in charge!
You see, it turns out that the cars that "could never be hacked" actually could be, and the hacker will show you what happens when you do not pay attention.
A live fed has been set up on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram showing the courtroom and all of the Jurors, it also shows the random 8 people that are now stuck in their cars and are all driving to the same location, the exact location, meaning that they will all crash...but the hacker will allow one person to live, who decides that....Oh...it's you!!
A wonderful read with a scary look into our near future.

Utterly Brilliant, Terrifying and Compelling
Rarely does a book stay with me for days beyond its completion, but this book was so intense and utterly overwhelming that I cannot stop thinking about it. A terrifying glimpse into the not too distant future and a scary taste of the dangers of social media, digital technology and of a self absorbed culture that is not interested in those around it. A brilliant audio book, and one of the best I have ever listened to.

Another banger!
Another banger by John Marrs, he is fast becoming one of my new favourite authors. It's like Black Mirror but with more back story and follow through. It would be easy to get swept away with the hype of driver less cars without thinking about how they could be used and abused but this book definitely makes you think. I highly recommend this book and the narration was good although I dislike the audio play feel to it sometimes.

Another excellent book from John Marrs
I’ve listened to all the author’s books on Audible and again I’ve listened to a cracker.
It’s an original story which kept me up all night and glued to the edge of my seat. It has more twists than a twisty thing more nasty characters than Eastenders, Coronation Street and Emerdale rolled into one. For a change our heroine has a backbone and not afraid to say how it is. The politicians are moustache swirling baddies but I enjoyed every single moment.
I’ve deducted one star for some intermittent annoying jingles peppered throughout.
The narration was excellent :) Mr Marrs isn’t writing quick enough for my liking so will wait quietly twiddling my thumbs till the next release on Audible.
