About this listen
This 2-in-1 box set collects both installments in Liv Zander's Pale Court duet: King of Flesh and Bone and Queen of Rot and Pain. This duology is a dark-fantasy romance featuring a ruthless man, a woman who can't escape his love, and a Happily Ever After.
This world contains dark themes, violence, loss, and elements of horror some may find disturbing. What this book doesn't contain is a hero—because villains do it better.

It’s a real shame it isn’t one, as it’s such a unique world with potentially really interesting characters, both main and side, that we don’t get to know much about. IMO it could have EASILY been a 5+ - much bigger books - utterly amazing series. A prequel book before our main characters meet would have been fascinating! Either way, with more detailed world building, character development, a brief but decent history overview, and a good slow burn enemies to lovers plot, this would rival the greats in fantasy romance - even more so with it being dark and fairly spicy, and ESPECIALLY with our FMC clearly above the age of a teen with adult life experience before meeting our MMC. I could have very easily and enjoyably spent weeks in this world. Especially with the ending and its potential to be utterly jaw dropping!
(To avoid spoilers - I won’t say who/why/how) but some parts, which felt fairly important to the overall plot (and ending) were left incomplete and conclusions left out, it would have finished it off nicely to tie it all up.
On to the audio:
I am fairly new to audio. I’ve only done a handful of them as I usually just read. I still physically read now, but I listen along too (thoroughly recommended if you have ADHD and Autism and hyper-focus on reading but still get easily distracted- like me 😬) anyway -
Duo/multi POV is my favourite, and I think it helped me understand the MMC much more than I would have without it, but I found it slightly annoying. The female had a lovely voice in parts and expressed emotions quite well in some, but she also sounded more like AI in others, almost like I was listening to a satnav. Her character (Ada’s) accent varied on words and phrases so much that I found it hard at times to decipher which character was supposed to be speaking. (Never had this issue before with other books) I also found it really very odd that both the female and male narrator spoke each others lines in their respective chapters. If you have a male narrator for his own chapters why is the female dropping her voice to try to sound like him in hers? And vice versa. It really doesn’t make sense to me and I found it slightly lazy and unnecessary tbh. Enosh’ voice is absolutely DEVINE (pun intended) & he doesn’t get many chapters as it is so I feel we really miss out on his parts during Ada’s chapters. I also noticed a few mistakes - but this wasn’t a big deal overall and shouldn’t put anyone off.
The author seems to be a great storyteller and her writing style is good for this genre. It’s my first of her books and I want to read more of her writing to see where it goes. I will be reading her Ravens duo next and I’m excited about that!
I fear this review will come over as quite negative overall and it’s not my intent; I did enjoy it for what it is and liked the plot so much that I wish it was longer and more detailed.
I think those who like this genre on the whole will enjoy the short story, but I do wish I’d had more of an idea on what to expect going in as I may have left it to read for another time.
* I Would like to add that I read standalones, interconnected, duets and multiple book series and I enjoy them all equally. My review is not based on preference for either/or*
It’s good.. but had the potential to be amazing!
