About this listen

Julie Klassen is the Gold Standard for Inspirational Regency Fiction

Sophie Dupont, daughter of a portrait painter, assists her father in his studio, keeping her own artwork out of sight. She often walks the cliffside path along the North Devon coast, popular with artists and poets. It's where she met the handsome Wesley Overtree, the first man to tell her she's beautiful.

Captain Stephen Overtree is accustomed to taking on his brother's neglected duties. Home on leave, he's sent to find Wesley. Knowing his brother rented a cottage from a fellow painter, he travels to Devonshire and meets Miss Dupont, the painter's daughter. He's startled to recognize her from a miniature portrait he carries with him—one of Wesley's discarded works. But his happiness plummets when he realizes Wesley has left her with child and sailed away to Italy in search of a new muse.

Wanting to do something worthwhile with his life, Stephen proposes to Sophie. He does not offer love or even a future together, but he can save her from scandal. If he dies in battle, as he believes he will, she'll be a respectable widow with the protection of his family.

Desperate for a way to escape her predicament, Sophie agrees to marry a stranger and travel to his family's estate. But at Overtree Hall, her problems are just beginning. Will she regret marrying Captain Overtree when a repentant Wesley returns? Or will she find herself torn between the father of her child and her growing affection for the husband she barely knows?

Enjoyed hearing more of how main characters settled into their lives when traumas ended, but would have liked more about others too.

Easy to distinguish voices of different characters.

This was such a good story. I found once I started listening I couldn't stop. So well written and a very enjoyable read. Lovely characters, a beautiful story and humour, I loved Winnie! I feel that I've found another fabulous author, so will be reading more! The narrator James Gillies was so good at reading this story, lovely rich tones to his voice and great characterisation, I only wish he had narrated more by this author, perfect in my opinion. Thank you to Julie Klassen and James Gillies for the perfect story.

A Fabulous Story!

I would recommend this book to all fans of Georgette Heyer. The war scenes are insightful and totally believable. The love triangle is both heart breaking and jubilant. I love the supporting characters, especially the old Nurse. This is a complex story. And will be one of my favourite, go to reads.

Intriguing romance

I enjoyed listening to this book. It was a light but entertaining story and I was not always sure was going to happen next. The reader represented the characters well.

An interesting read with twists and turns in the plot.

James Gillies is the only male narrator of Regency romance whom I have reviewed as 'perfect'. Utterly perfect - absolutely matched the story in every syllable. A true actor who does not obtrude. Caught and replayed the author's intent in every word. I can think of no higher praise.
As to the story ... my first thought was, " As good as the supreme Georgette Heyer". Her perfect thieves' cant and various other precisely researched historical detail were unnecessary in this particular plot, but that's merely because of the context. Georgette would have been proud of this perfect writing and delightful story.

Perfect male narration (very rare) of a perfect Regency romance story
