Summary

A listener-friendly guide to Zen Buddhist ethics for modern times.

In the West, Zen Buddhism has a reputation for paradoxes that defy logic. In particular, the Buddhist concept of nonduality—the realization that everything in the Universe forms a single, integrated whole—is especially difficult to grasp. In The Other Side of Nothing, Zen teacher Brad Warner untangles the mystery and explains nonduality in plain English. To Warner, this is not just a philosophical problem: Nonduality forms the bedrock of Zen ethics, and once we comprehend it, many of the perplexing aspects of Zen suddenly make sense.

Drawing on decades of Zen practice, he traces the interlocking relationship between Zen metaphysics and ethics, showing how a true understanding of reality—and the ultimate unity of all things—instills in us a sense of responsibility for the welfare of all beings. When we realize that our feeling of separateness from others is illusory, we have no desire to harm any creature. Warner ultimately presents an expansive overview of the Zen ethos that will give beginners and experts alike a deeper understanding of one of the world’s enduring spiritual traditions.

Great book about Zen and Ethics

Already bought and read the paper copy, picked up the audiobook as I like listening to books out and about, plus it helps in pronouncing the words that I couldn't in the paper copy.

Great book for anyone interested in Zen and Ethics.

Highly Recommend.

Best book of Brad Warner untill now

Brad Warner has been for me and many others the ultimate gateway to the serieus study of Soto Zen, Dōgen based Shikantaza practice. He makes the often difficult but brilliant philosophy of 13th century Japanese Zen Buddhist Master Dōgen accessible for modern readers like no other. Down to earth , with loads of humor, well written. This book, his best untill now (but read the others too!!), explanes Zen Buddhist ethics and will inspire generations to come to search their own way in the dharma treasury of pure wisdom.

Stilted narration, but good substance

Authors! Find an actor to read your books, don't think you can do it yourself! This is a lovely book, funny and smart, but most of the humour is lost due to the author's stilted, tentative delivery. At times, it's like he's learning to read in a new language. My issue maybe, but hard to listen to.

Interesting views on zen and life

A really interesting listen. The insights provided on what is reality was enlightening, so to speak. Will enjoy listening again to this, a bit weird at the end with the song 🤓
