Summary

This chance for us Howards comes once in a century…

1521. Henry VIII rules over a fashionable court alive with pageant and celebration, the lack of a son his only threat. When young Mary Boleyn arrives at court, she becomes his new mistress, an unwitting pawn in the ambitions of the powerful Boleyn and Howard families.

As Henry’s interest begins to wane, the Boleyns scheme to put forward Mary’s sister, Anne. Yet Anne Boleyn, newly returned from the French court, won’t agree to be Henry’s mistress – only his wife.

Pitting the king’s desperation for an heir against the advice of his powerful advisors, Wolsey and Cromwell, what follows will change the course of a country’s history.

I love this book. Some fact some fiction. A healthy dose of make up your own mind. It did show how expendable girls are. Make them do your bidding reap your male rewards, throw the girl to the wolves. A big dose of unhealthy ambition at the cost of everyone else. But I got a real feel of how dangerous it was to live in Henry's court. The feel of menace and how you could never win. Because no one was going to speak out about the lies or they would be in trouble. Amazing what people can do and convince themselves is ok. Self preservation I spose. The narrator was brilliant. I have read the book but enjoyed being read to.
The title of my review is because when I ask Alexa to play book, she says "playing the other Berlin girl". Now I'm going to listen to what Alexa will call the Berlin inheritance!

Don't rely on this for historical accuracy beyond the broad facts, but it conveys an interesting picture of Henry VIII and his court and brings that and the courtiers to life and is very good of its kind: Philippa Gregory does this kind of history very well. As almost nothing is known about Mary Boleyn she has free rein for her imagination - and doesn't adhere to what few facts are known - Mary was not married at 12 for instance. But this is a novel and one told from a female perspective, which brings home how little power women had over their own lives. The reader is ok if you don't mind the absence of characterisation and is easy to listen to.
