About this listen

DISCOVER THE MOST UNPUTDOWNABLE PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER OF THE YEAR. WINNER OF THE JOFFE BOOKS PRIZE 2023.

Love thy neighbour. Fear thy neighbour.

I thought moving to this quiet cul-de-sac was the fresh start my husband and I needed, escaping the noise of our cramped flat in Hounslow. I left India and all that was familiar for a new life with him in England.

But my husband works all hours, leaving me alone in a house that doesn’t feel like a home.

Our neighbours notice the bruises on my arms. They draw the obvious conclusions.

They seem kind, but they’re hiding something.

I just can’t shake the feeling that someone is always watching me . . . waiting.

My husband’s working late. Again. That’s when I see it.

A face pressed to the glass.

A hand waving.

It couldn’t be. Could it?

This utterly gripping and unputdownable psychological thriller full of shocking twists is perfect for fans of Steena Holmes, Freida McFadden, E.V. Seymour, Dandy Smith, Sonya Bateman or Nicole Trope.

this was an interesting story that was easy to listen too. It felt however that the writer tried too hard to add drama at some places and bee way too 'poetic' in others. I did enjoyed to book nevertheless.

easy listen, good story

The story was othervise good, but how vould a pregnant woman who has kicked out her husband, is expecting their first child, and without a job or income, be planning a trip to India, and maybe even to Australia after that? And together with her neighbour and newborn baby. With what money? She is also planning to introduce a rescue dog into their houshold with her elderly neighbour. Oh dear, keeping a dog costs money too, even if you get the animal for free...

The ending was not convincing

Plot could have moved faster but story does keep surprising you. Main characters interesting. Accents done well.

Slow going

Loved the curtain twitchy, domestic setting, coupled with the character driven, soap opera feel storyline, especially Edith’s observational monologues, delivering a significant and detailed disclosure of the comings and going’s, taking place within the Cul De Sac. To myself this was an entertaining and fascinating read, demonstrating some of the best and worst, emotional human traits, that most, I guess most of us have been the receptor and deliverer of, betrayal, love and deceit. As reviews have criticised the performance of the Liverpudlian accent, it was ok for most part, I would add, however my only criticism was how it dropped occasionally, additionally as to why it was at all necessary, to write the character as having a Liverpudlian background, subsequently adding reference to her residence in the south, being of that of 50 years. However in contrast, as a whole, I was in awe of Maggie Ollernhaws general narrative of Edith, very well written and performed. ‘The neighbours’ audiobook rendered me towards a state of positive dysfunction, into confined to barracks existence, for a good 24hours. Great stuff.

Satisfactory Character Driven Story
