What do I want from a whodunnit? Mostly escapism to pass otherwise dull hours & without either gruesome details a la Scandi noir or police procedures however true to "reality" they may undoubtedly be.
This is the 2nd Tom Mead title I have enjoyed and it serves up the same fare e.g. locked-room puzzles set in distant late 1930s milieus. This one has plenty re the mechanics of illusions too which are certainly intriguing, and an evil criminal mastermind, who I hope will feature in other books.
