Summary

The Mom Test is a quick, practical guide that will save you time, money, and heartbreak.

They say you shouldn't ask your mom whether your business is a good idea, because she loves you and will lie to you. This is technically true, but it misses the point. You shouldn't ask anyone if your business is a good idea. It's a bad question, and everyone will lie to you at least a little. As a matter of fact, it's not their responsibility to tell you the truth. It's your responsibility to find it, and it's worth doing right.

Talking to customers is one of the foundational skills of both customer development and lean startup. We all know we're supposed to do it, but nobody seems willing to admit that it's easy to screw up and hard to do right. This book is going to show you how customer conversations go wrong, and how you can do better.

Personally prefer listening to the audiobook ver.

Great for those who are introverted like me (and apparently him, too) and prefer to have steps laid down. Practical and doable advice.

Best book for startups to understand their customers

This is a great book. The author offers clear concise and lighthearted advice on how to engage with and learn from your customers. The insights you get from this process could be make or break for your business and may even help you to uncover previously unseen ideas for new products and services. It seems so simple but the techniques in here will give you jedi level customer understanding. Golden. If you’re a startup or a scaleup buy it now.

Short but good

Short but concise guide to user testing. Lots of excellent advice. Audio format is good to get the main arguments/techniques/how to advice but print would probably be easier.

absolute gold

I LOVED IT! The author is a great guy with vast experience that is in the book. He reads marvelously, sometimes getting a little bit off the track of written text, which greatly improved the pleasure of listening. Out of more than 30 audible books I enjoyed LISTENING to this was the most natural and pleasing experience. Thanks a lot, Rob!

Great for entrepreneurs

I feel like a lot of businesses fail because they ask the wrong questions. This book is good at keeping it simple and making sure you don’t get mislead.

Short, to the point and effective

As an entrepreneur looking to know my startup's customers and industry this book has been a great tool to better understand how to run meetings and make connections. The author failed at some point by saying that virtual meetings are not recommended (covid-19 proves the opposite) and by mentioning personal opinions as facts. My advice about this book is use it as base point to notice were you are failing, but don't take everything as fact. Draw your own conclusions from your own experience.

Delightful narration, insightful book

I'm not sure if I'll ever be on the customer side of a new technology venture but, either way, this was a book I needed to read. Fitzpatrick called me out on exactly what I've been doing wrong in so many conversations within and beyond product development. I hope that I muster the courage to act on his guidance and start asking questions that elicit real information. Moreover, this was one of the most enjoyable and natural audiobook performances I have heard.

Short and to the point

The lessons and clear and to the point. Way too many books on for 100 pages more than they needed to. This book avoids that mistake and for that I’m giving it 5 stars. Plus super important and useful content that will help many business founders.

A must for any entrepreneur

Avoid the common pitfalls of talking with clients, learn how to ask the right questions, and how to make clients tell you what you actually need to build. Narrated in a very fun and and casual way.
