Summary

The Mom Test is a quick, practical guide that will save you time, money, and heartbreak.

They say you shouldn't ask your mom whether your business is a good idea, because she loves you and will lie to you. This is technically true, but it misses the point. You shouldn't ask anyone if your business is a good idea. It's a bad question, and everyone will lie to you at least a little. As a matter of fact, it's not their responsibility to tell you the truth. It's your responsibility to find it, and it's worth doing right.

Talking to customers is one of the foundational skills of both customer development and lean startup. We all know we're supposed to do it, but nobody seems willing to admit that it's easy to screw up and hard to do right. This book is going to show you how customer conversations go wrong, and how you can do better.

Essential if you’re building something new

I run a team building company and I’m looking at creating new products to do with sustainability, I knew I needed to do customer research and this book was exactly what I needed it. Problem is exactly what he’s talking about and the river is this an easy to digest format. Essential business listening imo.

A game changer in how to approach clients

This book is a genuine game changer and Rob Fitzpatrick is a generous, compelling writer. He shows a lot of honesty and authenticity. He goes through mistakes he has made in asking for feedback and how it is easy to ask the wrong questions. But also, it is easy for those we are asking, to be uncomfortable telling the truth.
This book is a perfect read for anyone developing a new product or service, and wants feedback before investing time and money into creating this.
One of my reads of the year. Thanks Rob.

Honest experiences - but bad audio performance

Best thing about the book: honest experiences
Worst thing about the audio book: the audio performance

Great! The book is better than audio book

Really enjoyed it aa I did the book. However the distinctions between characters and humour evident in the book is a little unclear in the audio. It was designed to be read rather than spoken

Good But Background Hiss

Good book but audio has a background hiss which is annoying, but you get used to it.

Personally prefer listening to the audiobook ver.

Great for those who are introverted like me (and apparently him, too) and prefer to have steps laid down. Practical and doable advice.

Great Resource

I found this book insightful, clear with communicating concepts and overall very helpful as someone who has never found sales intuitive and is more interested in tech. The author does a great job getting to the point and keeping the listener engaged with stories of his own experiences of applying these ideas in the real world.

Common sense, but not obvious

Worth the short and easy listen. The narration is a little quirky if you’re used to highly produced audio books. But, just consider it more of a solo podcast or lecture and, although I haven’t yet applied them, I’m confident the concepts will be valuable. Thanks, Rob!

It’s not about “Does your mom understand your business idea.”

Rather it’s “Don’t ask your mom (or anyone, really) ‘Do you like my business idea?’” Giving honest feedback is too hard in that scenario, so they will unconsciously lie. This book is chock-full of ways to avoid letting yourself or others deceive you when it comes to getting feedback on your business.
