Summary
It's Christmas Eve. Flurries of snow fall on the cobbled streets of Whitechapel, and an abandoned baby, swaddled in a blanket, is found on a doorstep in Angel Lane....
Named after the street on which she was found, Angel Winter was blessed to be taken from the harsh streets into a loving home. But fate deals a cruel blow, and she's torn from the only family she has ever known, thrown onto the cobbles of Covent Garden to fend for herself.
With winter closing in, Angel scratches a living selling mistletoe to the city gentlemen who pass through the market, hoping they will take pity on her as she shivers in the snow. The only way she can survive is to make her own luck. She will never sell the one treasure that could feed her for a month, the gold and ruby ring that was hidden in her swaddling - it could hold the key to the secrets of her past....

so good I've heard it twice
I was bought into the world of Dilly Court with this book, an amazing story with history added. you follow the plight of Angel found in Whitechapel on Christmas eve . her trials through her young years and into womanhood are inconceivable to us today. read by an amazing narrator who makes the story come alive. I bought this in October and gave already listened to it twice.

Loved it!
Excellent story.
So much going on but very easy to follow. Loved the voices from the narrator gave you an idea of how the characters looked and what they were doing. This was my first Dilly Court book and I loved the way she writes and expresses the story. Just downloaded another so fingers crossed it’s as good.

Treat yourself to a wonderful story
I hope Annie Aldington will narrate many more of Dilly's books. Her voice with it's perfect pace and lovely intonation of the different characters is a perfect match with the great storyline.
I listened to a sample of another book on audible a while ago, and the pace of that narrator was too fast. It felt rushed and made me feel stressed. Obviously I did not buy that other book, but it illustrated to me the importance of a good narrator. Annie is not just Good but EXCELLENT. I enjoyed to hear about Angel with her tenacity and strength of character. Also she showed patience and grace in situations when I myself wanted to SLAP Susanna, the horrible, selfish cow. I admire how Dilly creates so many different characters that, together with the descriptions of the surroundings, weave a rich tapestry of wonderful stories for us all to enjoy. Oh, and she made me cry at the end, but I won't give anything away. Treat yourself to this story and find out.

A warm cosy read
I love all Dilly Courts books but this has to be one of my favourites, it’s another wonderful cosy read made all the better by the brilliant and very talented narration of Annie Aldington.
In typical Dilly Court style the book begins in the back streets of London on Christmas Eve, when a baby is found abandoned in Angel Lane in Whitechapel. She is taken to the local church ladies where one childless lady is totally captivated by the infant’s angelic face. With the baby in need of a wet nurse they head to the local jail and it is there we meet another main character ‘Lumpy Lil’ who is asked to nurse the child. The infant is then named Angel Winter, after the lane where she was found and the season of winter.
Several years later, tragedy strikes and Angel finds herself alone, homeless and penniless on the streets of London. It there she meets the effervescent Dolly and the two strike up a lasting friendship. Dolly takes Angel under wing and teaches her how to survive on the streets by selling flowers. Barefooted and almost frozen, Angel has almost sold all her Mistletoe when she is attacked and her money stolen. She has nothing left but still will not part with her secret keepsake, a gold and ruby ring that was found hidden in the bag when Angel was left in Angel Alley.
This is a heartwarming read, full of wonderful characters and the usual unsavoury character. It is story of never giving up hope, true friendship, and determination, overcoming adversity and very much about caring for others. It's an easy read that makes you smile, I loved it and would love to see a sequel.
