About this listen

When you think about retirement, what comes to mind? Maybe it has something to do with stopping work, but should it? Whatever your plans for retirement are, do you know how to achieve them? Do you know how your pensions, ISAs, property and everything else will come together to deliver the lifestyle you want one day?

In this deeply practical book, 25-year veteran financial planner Pete Matthew walks you through the three phases of retirement:

  • The Home Straight – the last five or ten years before retirement, when it’s time to get everything in place and aligned.
  • The Great Transition – for many of us, retiring is a process not an event and it looks different for each of us.
  • The New Normal – once we’re settled into our new life, we need to keep everything under review and look towards some later life planning.

In this book, you’ll find everything you need to KNOW and everything you need to DO to plan and enjoy your perfect retirement.

The Meaningful Money Retirement Guide is, without doubt, one of the most valuable books I’ve read on the topic of retirement. It stands out for its clarity, relevance, and practical approach—making it essential reading for anyone in the UK who is approaching retirement, navigating the transition, or already retired.

What truly sets this book apart is its structure. Each chapter is thoughtfully designed, beginning with a clear introduction, followed by concise explanations of what you need to know, and ending with actionable steps—making it easy to turn insight into action. It’s a format that encourages real progress and removes the overwhelm often associated with retirement planning.

While the book is tailored to a UK audience, many of the principles are universally applicable, offering valuable guidance to readers beyond the UK as well.

Whether you’re just starting to think about retirement or are already well into the journey, this guide offers both the strategic insight and practical tools you need to plan confidently. I highly recommend it.

I have been following Pete for quite a few years and I am always impressed by not only his knowledge of personal finance but his example of how to run a business while building a side hustle.

The meaningful money podcast and Pete’s newsletter have contributed massively towards my own journey of building a live I don’t want/need to retire from.

This latest book had helped plug some of the gaps in my knowledge and while it would have been a great addition to know how Pete is planning his own retirement, I am conscious that this book is all about helping others plan their retirement.

I was worried about addressing my finances as I approached retirement but Pete’s book totally removed that fear. For laymen like myself, pensions appeared to be a minefield shrouded in regulation, jargon and mystery. I’d always promised myself I would sort out my pension but it was easier to brush it under the carpet and say ….. ‘next year’. Reading this book made me realise that following the structured, clearly defined steps I could take that fear on …… and I did!
I now have my ‘pots’ all in one place, I know exactly where that money is invested, and I know it’s working hard for me when I finally decide to retire.
More than anything, this book has given me peace of mind.
A fantastic book ……. 5 Stars * * * * *

The fear of sorting out my pension has completely gone
