Summary

A romance develops as a detective partners with a lonely-hearts columnist to solve a murder mystery.

London, 1885

Amelie Hampton is a hopeless romantic, which makes her the perfect columnist to answer lonely heart letters in The Marriage Gazette. When Amelie plays matchmaker with two anonymous lonely hearts, she also decides to secretly observe the couple’s blind date. To her surprise, the man who appears for the rendezvous is Harold Radcliffe - a grieving widower and a member of Amelie’s book club.

Police detective Michael Baker has been struggling ever since his best friend and brother-in-law died in the line of fire. Because he knows the dangers of his job, he has vowed never to marry and subject a wife and family to the uncertainty of his profession. But when he meets Miss Hampton, he is captured by her innocence, beauty, and her quick mind.

When a woman’s body is pulled from the river, Michael suspects the woman’s husband - Harold Radcliffe - of foul play. Amelie refuses to believe that Harold is capable of such violence but agrees to help, imagining it will be like one of her favorite mystery novels. Her social connections and clever observations prove an asset to the case, and Amelie is determined to prove Mr. Radcliffe’s innocence. But the more time Amelie and Michael spend together, the more they trust each other and the more they realize they are a good team, maybe the perfect match.

They also realize that Mr. Radcliffe is hiding more than one secret, and when his attention turns toward Amelie, Michael knows he must put an end to this case before the woman he loves comes to harm.

Justine Eyre is better than this!

Not a bad story and enjoyable characters but whoever directed and had Justine Eyre do such a silly voice deserves opprobrium on a grand scale.

Can't bear the accents

The narrator sounds like they're in pain when pronouncing most words and I'm struggling to get past it. A few hours in and the story is alright but not sure if I'll finish it as it's fairly flat read this way.

Irresponsible police force!

I do enjoy fiction but this book is very farfetched, quite enjoyed the characters

OK

Slightly irritating nativity, a couple of Americanisms, which appear in most stories now, to appeal over the water. I do wonder why as they have read English books for years and obviously understood them. why start pandering in the last 5 years?

Cute story awful narration

I stuck with this story because it was fun, and free(!) However, the narrator is awful. So strange. Emphasis in words in odd places. Emphasis in sentences in wrong places. Little variation between characters. She pronounces so many words incorrectly, I am convinced English is her second language, or she is trying to talk how she thinks upper class people talk. So strange - "perhaps" becomes "prehaps", "her" becomes "hre", "auburn" becomes "oban" just a few of the multitude of weird pronunciations. A shame for the author.

An enjoyable audiobook

This is an enjoyable audiobook with engaging characters and a cunning villain. I have read other reviews that criticised the narration but I thought it was fine.

A good story but let down by inconsistencies and historical inaccuracy

The inconsistencies and historical inaccuracies really let this novel down. If you are going to write about a historical period then make sure you actually understand the period, the way society works, the proprieties and behaviours that are appropriate. A certain amount of artistic licence works, but a complete disregard or ignorance of the period makes for a painful read.

The narrator does excellent voices but has a habit of torturing certain words completely out of shape. If you are going to narrate a story peopled by the English then make sure your pronunciation is actually English.

Thank God that's over.

The narration was so annoying, the protagonist was annoying I tuned out during the second half just so I could finish the book! The least entertaining book I've listened to on audible.
