To solve an impossible murder, you need an impossible hero…
Seventy-seven-year-old Judith Potts is blissfully happy. She lives alone in a faded mansion in Marlow, sets crosswords for The Times, and there’s no man in her life to tell her what to do or how much whisky to drink.
One evening, while out swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder. When the local police don’t believe her story, Judith and two unlikely friends decide to investigate for themselves. Together, they are the Marlow Murder Club.
But soon another body turns up, and it seems they have a real-life serial killer on their hands. Now the puzzle they set out to solve has become a trap from which they might never escape…

A delight to listen to
I absolutely loved this fun, charming murder mystery. Seventy seven year old crossword creator Judith Potts lives in a mansion overlooking the river and when she hears a gunshot from her neighbours property on the other side of the river whilst out swimming nude, she immediately goes to investigate. Disappointed by the police response she sets out to solve the mystery herself helped by Becks, the vicar's wife and Suzie, a local dog walker.
The book is a delight to listen to, and I listened in a day. The writing is superb with plenty of humour, the pacing is perfect, and Mr Thorogood has created a fantastic cast of eccentric characters. It's great to see an older character take centre stage, and I can only describe Judith Potts as a modern day Miss Marple.
I couldn't help comparing this with Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club which I read last year and which also has a cast of elderly sleuths, but I enjoyed this book much more. I really, really hope this will become a series (maybe even a tv show?) as I'd love to meet Judith again.
Nicolette McKenzie did a great job with the narration.

Brilliant
Stumbled upon this by accident and liked it a lot, fabulously British, humourous but pacey. Brilliant characters and excellently read. have preordered the 2nd one already.

Enjoyable listen
An enjoyable easy listen, perfect for bedtime. Excellent narration, well worth a listen. If you like 'cosy' crime, give this a go.

Fun book!
This was a really nice and easy listen. I always enjoy Nicolette McKenzie's narrations (away with the penguins is my fave). The storyline and plot were OK and I will look forward to Book 2. I'm really not sure why this book has so many comparisons to the Thursday murder club...they are nothing alike apart from having an old age main character and the words "murder club" in the title. Both equally good reads but nothing alike.

Charming small town murders
A nicely constructed, thoughtful novel in the (horrible name) ‘cosy crime’ genre. Perfectly decent diversion or pastime, with some nice red herrings and appealing characters. No wild surprises or stunning insights, but nothing ridiculous or infuriating either.
Some production errors and annoyances - repeated lines, a few poorly edited gaps, etc - from about two-thirds through.

Excited to see what they get up to next
I know Marlow, and its always good to hear stories about areas you know. The story is great, it's a puzzle rather than a grusome torture fest so it intrigues but does not scare. The story has the requisite twists and turns, and a bit of a surprise at the end. I listened to this while I did that very genteel thing of gardening. Perfect combination.
Enjoy

a good who dunnit
There were some unexplained loose ends in the story which were annoying. Despite guessing the answer early on it was still a good listen.

Enjoyable
Well written and well read book.
Would recommend to anybody who enjoys a good murder mystery without too much description on how the victims died.
