To solve an impossible murder, you need an impossible hero…

Seventy-seven-year-old Judith Potts is blissfully happy. She lives alone in a faded mansion in Marlow, sets crosswords for The Times, and there’s no man in her life to tell her what to do or how much whisky to drink.

One evening, while out swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder. When the local police don’t believe her story, Judith and two unlikely friends decide to investigate for themselves. Together, they are the Marlow Murder Club.

But soon another body turns up, and it seems they have a real-life serial killer on their hands. Now the puzzle they set out to solve has become a trap from which they might never escape…

Excellent

Great entertainment , I am suspicious that Richard Osman’s book (which is not half as good as this), was pushed out for early release. This is way better than the Thursday Murder Club. Enjoy!

Think people need to take things less seriously

If everyone else is going to mention another book in their review I will as well. I didn't enjoy this as much as the Thursday Murder Club and that's fine!
This book is well written and I really liked some of the characters. I didn't like the main character though. Also whilst I liked the vicars wife the best, I thought her character arc was a bit predictable.
Overall though I really enjoyed it! So what if there's another book with a similar title and old lady in it - there are only so many interesting plots to be had and both books are good and vary a lot in other ways!

A delight to listen to

I absolutely loved this fun, charming murder mystery. Seventy seven year old crossword creator Judith Potts lives in a mansion overlooking the river and when she hears a gunshot from her neighbours property on the other side of the river whilst out swimming nude, she immediately goes to investigate. Disappointed by the police response she sets out to solve the mystery herself helped by Becks, the vicar's wife and Suzie, a local dog walker.

The book is a delight to listen to, and I listened in a day. The writing is superb with plenty of humour, the pacing is perfect, and Mr Thorogood has created a fantastic cast of eccentric characters. It's great to see an older character take centre stage, and I can only describe Judith Potts as a modern day Miss Marple.

I couldn't help comparing this with Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club which I read last year and which also has a cast of elderly sleuths, but I enjoyed this book much more. I really, really hope this will become a series (maybe even a tv show?) as I'd love to meet Judith again.

Nicolette McKenzie did a great job with the narration.

Average ..

I brought this Audible book as many of the reviews compare it to another book, The Thursday murder club.. and most said this one was better …. Well I have to disagree, sometimes it got confusing which character was talking and the end was a bit boring the main character seemed to go on and on … and it was some what predictable. Where as I’ve rushed out to by the second book of the Thursday Murder Club, I won’t with this one, it was just ok, a nice listen.

Enjoyable but quite a linear storyline

I enjoyed listening to this but didn’t feel it had much depth or range to it.

Delightful

All the best bits of a Cosy mystery, with eccentric characters, subtle comedy and excitement. A real joy to listen to.

loved this story!

Got to know this book through a book club. Really enjoyed the narrative, the characters and the narrator. At times it felt like I was in a living room, on a comfy sofa, while someone told me a story.

Absolutely brilliant.

I agree with all of the other reviewers in saying that this book is so much better than The Thursday Murder Club and it would make a fantastic film or TV show. The narrator Nicolette McKenzie is excellent - one of the best I’ve heard on audible so far. I hope there will be another instalment soon.

Excellent - wonderfully narrated and excellent plot.

Thoroughly enjoyed this, my first audible book and won’t be my last.
The characters in the story are so relatable and I am hoping to join them on another adventure soon.

Nicolette’s narration brought them to life for me. It was funny and kept me in wonderful suspense. Wonderful listening.

Thanks so much to Robert, I highly recommend this book.
