Summary

Can he restore his lost love's memories?

Jethro finds a woman he thought lost, but her memories have been taken.

She has become a clean.

Aeons govern and regulate the cities that remain on Earth. From their alien veins springs a substance that allows humans to communicate through telepathy. In their minds lurks the power to remove human memories.

Jethro's actions push both him and the clean called Rain into the heart of action and intrigue the likes of which he has never known before.

Where do lost memories go?

Everyone knows the Cleans cannot be restored.

A future world overseen by an alien race, the Aeons: they seem mostly benign, almost invisible, but what is left of the world is completely changed. To succeed, people are dependent on a liquor provided by the Aeons which gives the consumers access to a form of telepathy, the ability to enter and explore the minds of others. It gives an extraordinary tool for success to those who use is widely but for those who over indulge the price is total memory loss. Wiped clean, such people become slaves, bought and sold, to do whatever is required of their owners. No Clean has been known to recover, though there were rumours...
When Jethro sees a Clean at a market, he is reminded of a girl he had known and loved in his youth. And, against all of his principles, he buys her.

This is a vividly painted world, both exterior and, incredibly, interior to the minds whilst using the drug. The story itself is simple; the writing, ideas and exploration is not. A very difficult concept to achieve fully, the author mostly succeeds. Fascinating, intriguing - and a splendid start to a series that this reader will definitely follow up with book two.
The narration by Dan McAdam was downbeat, which fitted the book's tone, but with some odd phrasings. Character voicings were differentiated and the performance was good overall, but too slow - easily resolved by increasing the playback speed to 1.25.
At my request, I was freely gifted a complimentary copy of The Mangrove Suite by the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom. Thank you so much. A very enjoyable and unusual book which I am sure would be enjoyed by S.F. fans and, in particular, gamers who like to delve into psychodylic mind sets. Recommended especially for readers who want something different.

Benevolent alien overlords?

This author builds an interesting world in this book, it is a futuristic world, but one that exists predominantly due to aliens known as the Aeons who help to enable telepathic powers in the human race.

All is not perfect in this world though, there still exist crimes and the ultimate punishment for a human is to be turned into what is known as a clean, all memories and personality being wiped away from the person leaving little more than shells that are bought and sold. Jethro recognises one of these cleans as somebody he used to know and he is driven to try and bring her back to her real self.

This book is quite a short one and as such it is more difficult to connect with the characters, but the narrator helps greatly in this respect with his performance adding nicely to the overall story with pleasant and distinctive tone.

Overall, this was a good starting point to a series with regards to world-building, but with the need to lay the ground rules for this world, it might have needed a bit more time for the story.
