Summary
Gritty, newcastle-set crime for fans of Ian Rankin and Robert Galbraith. Shortlisted for the CWA John Creasey Dagger and a Theakston's New Blood author for 2020.
It started with a splash. Jimmy, a homeless veteran grappling with PTSD, did his best to pretend he hadn't heard it - the sound of something heavy falling into the Tyne at the height of an argument between two men on the riverbank. Not his fight.
Then he sees the headline: GIRL IN MISSING DAD PLEA. The girl, Carrie, reminds him of someone he lost, and this makes his mind up: it's time to stop hiding from his past. But telling Carrie, what he heard - or thought he heard - turns out to be just the beginning of the story.
The police don't believe him, but Carrie is adamant that something awful has happened to her dad and Jimmy agrees to help her, putting himself at risk from enemies old and new.
But Jimmy has one big advantage: when you've got nothing, you've got nothing to lose."

Clear evolution of plot
Beautifully read with compelling characters giving a realistic street view of life. Sh1t jostles with hope and redemption. We're challenged to respect all equally, and never to underestimate those who can make a real difference for good.

I’m a geordie
So loved the place referenced. Narrator was clever in his changing characters and for this reason the constant use of “he said, she said” really irritated me. Not even supplemented for “he asked, she asked” etc.
Despite this, Jimmy, the main character, is either the luckiest or the unluckiest man ever! Definitely kept me listening and would recommend.

great crime novel with a twist
Loved this. Unusual set up good plot and characters. waiting for next in series! The narrator was also very good, a proper Geordie. Happy to see a protagonist who isn't just the archetypal "flawed detective".

Good start
This is an interesting start, I will definitely give the next book a go too. I’ll be interested to see exactly where the author can take Jimmy’s character.

Brilliant performance
Lovely to hear a real Geordie bringing a story to life with such charisma. Hate to hear non-Geordie’s attempt the accent...it’s as if they have learnt the words to a song but can’t manage the tune. Some great characters in this book who are memorable as well as likeable...even Dog. A good story made more enjoyable by the excellent performance.

Great Listen, would highly recommend.
Loved the descriptions of the area, could picture all the locations, as know the area well.
Characters are well researched, and I feel are brought to life by the story teller.

Thoroughly enjoyable!
Well written and narrated, this book was an extremely enjoyable read. Being native to Newcastle, the settings were spot on and added to the atmosphere.
The characters were believable... I’m sure the geordies all know a Gadgie and a Dino..... I guffawed at their one liners.
The book was recommended by a friend of the author and it did not disappoint.

Great start
This a great start to a new series. A different perspective to the normal detective novel. Jimmy is ex naval police , damaged by his experiences in the Falklands war. He is living rough on the streets of Newcastle. After he witnesses a murder he teams up with the daughter of a man who is missing to solve the case. This book is set in my home town and the characters surrounding Jimmy are richly drawn . I hope this is the first of a new series. I would like to know how Jimmy gets on . David Nellist does a fine job as narrator, he is a Geordie so gets the accent spot on .

Excellent, atmospheric read
I loved this book - full of insights into life on the streets and the reality of living with PTSD, and yet with some sense of hope and redemption. Great Newcastle setting, too.
