About this listen

Jodi Brown is walking her beloved dog Milo, in a North London wood, unaware that she is being stalked. When her dog is stolen and later returned to her by Samantha Hooper, Jodi believes this to be an act of kindness and a friendship develops between the two young women. What she doesn’t know – is that Samantha is intent on using Jodi to commit the perfect murder.

This suspenseful psychological thriller revolves around Samantha Hooper, a disturbing presence who drives the story, Jodi Brown the unsuspecting prey who gets caught up in Samantha’s net and Raif Kennedy, a slick American with a beautiful wife and a colourful past. Jude Brown, Jodi’s estranged musician brother, heavily in debt and with a history of alcohol abuse, completes the foursome.

What links these characters together is love, lust and betrayal. All four don’t leave through the same door they came in. And one of them doesn’t make it out at all ...

I had to invent excuses to go on walks so that I could keep listening to this incredible book, narrated brilliantly by the author. I was rooting for both female leads all the way through - no mean feat considering some of the things they do and the fact that they're working against each other! The twists just kept coming. Highly recommend this for anyone who loves a good thriller with psychologically real, nuanced characters and a plot that keeps throwing you curveballs.

Utterly thrilling and unputdownable

I downloaded this book after having it recommended by a friend who said it’s the best book they have ever listened too. As that was some praise indeed I thought I would have to listen myself.

What can I say? Wow! The story is so gripping and the characters hook you in throughout. I love how the book is narrated by the author. It gives it more authenticity and you can feel the passion the author has for the book in her narration. The characters come to life in the most entertaining ways and the story evolves over the book in such a way that I forgot at times how long I’d been listening as I was listening so intently to the story.

If you are looking for a story that will provide you some escapism from the day to day and provide entertainment through a thought provoking story with knife edge twist and turns then this is the book for you to listen too.

This story would make a great TV show, I would also like to see the story told that way too as it does lend itself to both book and tv.

I hope to see more from this author in the future too. 5/5 stars from me.

5/5 Gripping and engaging story from start to finish.

If you enjoyed ‘Gone Girl’ or ‘The Girl on the Train’ this book is for you. It delivers electrifying twists and turns, and an intricate, well researched plot, filled with nail-biting suspense. But it also brings something extra. The writer Annie Hulley shows a compassion for her characters and an understanding of the reasons behind their dark secrets and darker deeds that is rare in this kind of book, and for my money lifts it above the thriller genre. It is read in the honeyed voice of the writer herself but be prepared, those reassuring tones deliver some chills along the way and a deliciously satisfying final killer punch.

Satisfying killer punch.

This is the first audio book that I have ever listened to and it took me a while to get used to not having the book in my hand! However I soon sat back and relaxed into letting the reader turn the pages for me. It didn't take me long to picture the characters and the scenes because the writer was meticulous in describing every detail. I looked forward to my 'me time' with a coffee and listening to the calculated movements of the killer.

"The Man She Never Met" is gripping. It leads you straight to the heart of the two main players and what makes them tick, and yet it never sacrifices its ability to intrigue; the plot is full of twists and turns and surprises right until the end. Psychologically profound and very intense, it is a really satisfying read.

I'm glad that the ending was just open enough for me to be able to say that I am looking forward to seeing what Piper gets up to next!

A great story, well read by the author. I have already downloaded some more books to listen to.
