Summary

With more than 1.3 million video views each month and over 52 million total views on her YouTube channel, Howland's (aka Mama Natural) funny but informational videos have empowered millions of women to embrace natural pregnancy and parenting. Now Howland is turning to books, offering up the first week-by-week natural pregnancy book for soon-to-be moms.

For the last half century, control over childbirth has been in favor of doctors. Many pregnancy guidebooks are conventional, fear based, and written by male physicians deeply entrenched in the old-school medical model of birth.

But change is underway. A groundswell of women are taking back their pregnancies and childbirth and embracing a natural way. Genevieve Howland, the woman behind the enormously popular Mama Natural blog and YouTube channel, has created an inspiring, fun, and informative guide that demystifies natural pregnancy and walks Mom through the process one week at a time.

The Mama Natural's Week-by-Week Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth is the modern (and yet ancient) approach to pregnancy and childbirth. "Natural" recognizes that pregnancy and birth are normal and that having a baby is a wondrous biological process and rite of passage - not a medical condition. This book draws upon the latest research showing how beneficial and life changing natural birth is for both babies and moms.

Full of weekly advice and tips for a healthy pregnancy, Howland details vital nutrition to take, natural remedies for common and troublesome symptoms, and the appropriate (and inappropriate) use of interventions. Peppered throughout are positive birth and pregnancy stories from women of all backgrounds (and all stages of their natural journeys) along with advice and insights from a certified nurse midwife (CNM) plus a registered nurse (RN), a doula, and a lactation consultant. Encouraging, well researched, and fun, The Mama Natural's Week-by-Week Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth will be an essential companion for women everywhere to embrace natural pregnancy and reap all the benefits for both baby and mama.

PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your My Library section along with the audio.

Great week by week guide

I think this a great book, especially for the first time natural minded mama. Most of the information is really great and really valuable. However, I do have an issue with some of the "natural" skin care she suggests especially when it comes to chloasma. For the love of the skin on your face DO NOT put lemon juice on your face in any concentration ESPECIALLY if you are going to be out in the sun. It will not help to lighten you chloasma and in fact, could make things worse. Citric acid like that found in lemon and lime are known to cause photodermatitis, it is a chemical reaction between the citric acid and the uv rays and can cause a very severe sunburn. This is very well known and I am surprised it made it into the book. Furthermore, when it comes to this type of hormonal hyperpigmentation there is unfortunately very little that can be done to reduce its appearance, just make sure you are wearing an SPF 30 every day and wearing a hat when you will be exposed to the sun for long periods of time. Some of the other skin care things are questionable as well but not as offensive as that, please if you are having issues with your skin go see a dermatologist or a skin care specialist, they will be able to point you in a better direction. In the case of skin care natural is not always better.

Only for the granola types with a lot of cash

I got this book because I wanted a few pointers to clean up my pregnancy. I already eat pretty clean and am conscious of what is in my products but by no means am I "all-natural". I want to do an un-medicated birth and really got this book to help me prepare for it. I found it condescending honestly. It is obvious the author doesn't intend for this to happen, she even says that this book is for anyone, anywhere on the natural spectrum- from those looking for natural remedies for pregnancy aches and pains all the way to those having an at home water birth and everyone in between. I really think she means it too. But when it comes to it, she gets on her soap box about going totally natural at every turn. She comments on the expense and tells you that its worth it. In other words, if you don't spend three times the price on plant based vitamins over the already expensive regular prenatals, your baby is going to be born with birth defects because you couldn't cough up the bucks. This book is not given in an informative way, instead it is more suggestive. So if you don't have the ability to follow one of her tips, you are left feeling like you are failing your unborn child. Outside of that, I found it hard to follow. There are no chapters, so I couldn't easily go back to any tips I did bookmark. Would be better in print if you decide to get it. If you are already a very natural person or looking to really go totally natural in your lifestyle, this would be a good book. But if you are an average person who has incorporated a few natural things into your lifestyle but are not yet ready to take the costly plunge into all- natural, this book is not for you.

It was ok

It was a bit confusing with the weeks. It would be great if chapters would be done by weeks so easier for audio.

The scaring about the epidural is a bit over the top.

Good book but missing information

I liked the audio book but wish I had gotten the physical book. This is because:
1. the chapters have no titles so I couldn’t find where I heard something before.
2. There are recipes and other information referred to in the book that the audio book doesn’t have at all.

Great for men too

I frequently listen to audiobooks in the car and while running so I purchased this as soon as I found out we were pregnant. I would listen to this while my wife read Ina Mays book and listened to other audiobooks. We compared what we learned and would frequently listen to this when in the car together. It’s incredibly useful and detailed. It just may be the best of all the books we read or listened to. Her blog is great too. This really helped me learn what what my wife was going through and how I could support her from helping with cooking to preparing the nursery and so on. I highly recommend this for anyone!

comprehensive natural childbirth manual

this really is the perfect overview to natural childbirth. it gives plenty of references and ideas that you can do more research into yourself. the readers and performance was also very high quality, enjoyable and very entertaining. there were some anecdotal examples, but most premises were based on science and statistics. highly recommend!
