About this listen

Helen Ross, a twenty-nine-year-old biologist, is sent to a sleepy Rocky Mountain ranching town to defend a pack of wolves from those who want to destroy them. For in Hope, Montana, a century ago, the wolf was slaughtered to extinction, and though they're now protected by law as an endangered species, the old hatred runs deep.

Alone in this hostile place, bruised by a broken love affair, Helen struggles for self-esteem and survival, embarking on a dangerous alliance with the son of her most ferocious opponent, the brutal and charismatic Buck Calder.

Critic reviews

" The Horse Whisperer...conveyed a genuine and personal emotional charge which resonated with millions of readers. The Loop confirms that [Evans] is that rare phenomenon, a natural storyteller." ( Mail on Sunday)
"As good as Evans's first novel, The Horse Whisperer...total entertainment." ( Daily Telegraph, Australia)
"Drama...power...passion." ( The Times)

A beautifully written story about tie USA West and wolves.. an eye opener to conservation and how passionate people are in all fields to protect it. Superbly read by the narrator in a lovely sing song voice that carries you into those hills and beyond. A fantastic story and throughly recommend

A real tale of the wilderness

Suerb narration (as always) from Laurel Lefkow. Storyline wise I really enjoyed the sense of place this novel evokes. The underlying menace from the ranchers pervades throughout. The ending was a little rushed and granted an undeserved forgiveness which I think would not be the outcome if the book was written today (attitudes have changed since 1998!) Overall, I really enjoyed all but the last few pages.

Absorbing Audiobook

I read this book years ago and was looking for an easy listen. I remembered that I really enjoyed reading it (just like the Horse Whisperer)but I couldn’t remember much about it apart from the wolves. I absolutely loved listening to the story. I think the narrator has the characters just right - although the Luke in my head was quite different. It’s traumatic and sad but also fantastic. I loved it again.

Sad but wonderful

I was so pleased to see that one of my favourite books had been added to Audible. The narrator reminded me of Michelle Obama and has a beautiful voice. I thoroughly enjoyed listening. Highly recommended.

Loved the book, loved the audio version.
